Doom is to slow for my taste, Black Metal - some good bands, but I usually stay away from it because Ccrpsepaint and dyed hair is lame^^
No, I said I'd rather listen to metalcore than most of the bands you listed. And nah, death metal isn't really that related to thrash metal.

This is the death metal I'm talking about:

Black metal isn't about corpse paint or dyed hair.

I can't believe no one mentioned Black Sabbath, probably the first Heavy Metal band in the world...

I like quite a few metal bands, of differing sub-genres. That said, there are also a huge, huge number of metal bands I can't stand.

    Hammerfall
    Bolt Thrower
    Carcass
    Metallica
    Opeth
    Korn
    Orphaned Land
    Edguy
    At The Gates
    Fear Factory
    Strapping Young Lad
    Amon Amarth
    Anaal Nathrakh
    Isis

    etc

That's actually an interesting song. Took some growing into it. Should probably try the album as a whole.

Aesahaettr; Props to you for especially mentioning Orphaned Land and Strapping Young Lad even if there are also some names I dislike, KoRn most notably.

Think I linked a song by OL at some point in the past - not surprising considering how genius Mabool is - but yet to do that for SYL.
Strapping Young Lad - Love? (Quite easily the band's most famous song)
Strapping Young Lad - Force Fed (Not nearly as known, but one of my personal favourites)

After paging through some of the posts and responses in this thread, I have to say I'm disappointed in quite a few of my fellow "metal-heads" (what does this term even mean anymore?). People need to realize that its not about what exact sub-genre you listen too, but more about supporting the cause. Metal is a glorious and awesome thing, and our already tarnished name doesnt need to be soiled by ridiculous in-fighting and bashing.

Remember, its all about the music.

With that said, its safe to say that I'm into pretty much all of the different varieties of metal. My all time favorite song is South of Heaven by Slayer, but I'm stoked for the new Avenged Sevenfold album coming out tomorrow. Also, if you EVER get a chance to see Opeth live, make it your life's mission to go. Miss your daughters rehearsal, be late to the soccer game, and be a no-show for your Thursday night ICC raid. It will all be worth it as you see Mikael Åkerfeldt scream out Ghosts of Perdition.

Read all 20 pages and theres a few Irish Folk metal bands not mentioned that might pique some interest(as you can guess from my name, I'm Irish)

Mael Mordha Celtic doom metal(self proclaimed)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5WNK4EG55A Cluain Tarbh

Waylander Death/Black Folk Metal (Depending on album really)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wluU1kX-cfA As the Deities Clash
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L06lbxs5xGw King of the Faeries

Cruachan(one person mentioned them already!) Black Folk Metal
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGhxfia-lEI Cuculainn

    Primordial Celtic Metal
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVfPr39HqQo Gods to the Godless

I would recommend these bands to anyone interested in folk/death
As a comparison, some similar bands I would listen to are
    Turisas
    Tyr
    Ensiferum
    Korpiklanni
    Finntroll
    Skyclad
    Burzum
    Eluveitie

Now, getting away from Folk-y types.
These bands arent Irish, but nobody mentioned them!

Destroyer 666 Death Metal (Eh, well, kinda, maybe Battle-Death or something EDIT: aeh, Satanic Speed Metal, how could i forget)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax7cdHiZ010 I am the Wargod

Ministry You could argue Industrial, but their last 3 albums were solid Industrial Metal
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBGMW86u1Qk No W

Neurosis Genre: N\A (Listen to more than one album and you'll understand, I believe the term for their genre is Cult of NeurIsis, comprised of Cult of Luna, Neurosis and Isis. Though tbh, I really dont think the others compare to Neurosis, but thats my opinion. And this selection may annoy some genre-elitists )
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmdmnnv2NkY Locust Star

Other misc stuff I would listen to
    Mastodon
    Celtic frost
    Slayer (duh)
    Altar of Plagues
    Electric Wizard
Strapping Young Lad (and Devins 'Ziltoid the Omniscient')
    Isis
    Moss
    Cannibal Corpse
    The Berzerker
and more that I cant remember right now.

Are you new to metal? Not trying to be insulting, but subgenre fighting is exceedingly common with metal. Black metal fans do not get along with power metal fans, at all. And small wonder, the music is basically polar opposites of each other. I find more in common with black metal and punk than I do with black metal and power metal. Much more in common.

Back when I started listening to metal in the late 90s, I posted on a board called beyonddeath. It was a message board for what was basically the Century Media style of metal. Opeth, Ulver, Dimmu Borgir, Samael, bands like that. And man, the fighting was ridiculous. You had your raw, Burzum black metal fans absolutely blasting your symphonic, Dimmu Borgir black metal fans. And that's just black metal vs black metal!

Trying to say that it's all metal won't work. It'll never work. And it's because metal is the most vast form of music around. There's so many sounds, themes, and atmospheres in metal and there's no guarantee that you'll like them all, or even the majority of them, even if you are a diehard metal fan.

Anyone mentioned Legion of the damned yet. They are next Slayer imo.

To me subgenres are extremely important. I don't enjoy them so I could look down on people depending on what they listen to, but I think separating different aspects of the music helps alot in finding the kind of artists, bands and songs you wish to find.

Let's say you fall in love with an obscure band, if you know how to make out the different compositional sides they have it helps in familiarizing yourself with more similar acts.

I also simply think it's fun to "study" the music without having to go very deep into the theory.

Sigh - The Summer Funeral - just because it apparently reminds many people of Final Fantasy.

    For the Death Metal fans:

    Old school DM p1
    Old school DM p2

    DeathThrash p1
    DeathThrash p2

Just some random youtube links showing different bands.

They're (short for They are) describes a group of people. "They're/They are a nice bunch of guys." Their indicates that something belongs/is related to a group of people. "Their car was all out of fuel." There refers to a location. "Let's set up camp over there." There is also no such thing as "could/should OF". The correct way is: Could/should'VE, or could/should HAVE.

I'm not trying to say that all of us should just innately enjoy all types of metal; that would be insane. What I am saying is that getting legitimately upset over someone who likes a slightly (lets be honest, it is slight for the most part) different type of music is just beyond me. I'm not exactly a fan of Doom and Black Metal, but I dont disrespect the people who do.

Just people being people I guess. I've been known to bash on rap and country fans I guess, so who am I to say anything about metalheads fighting with metalheads. Carry on!

New A7X is album is good btw. They are shaping up to be the next Metallica.

Boring, with poorly constructed overly long songs desperately trying to relive their early days? Or did you mean it in a "Let's add an orchestra, but don't put it up too loud - people need to hear Lars' bassdrums wobbling all over the place and they'll LOVE it and we'll earn $$"-type of way?

Slightly different? You mean polar opposites. I hear more in common with Peste Noire and Radiohead (no lie) than I do Peste Noire and Gamma Ray.

A7X is one of the worst bands of all time, btw.
