    New computer. Suggestions?

Okay, so I'm getting a new computer and only have roughly $600 to spend.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+Ess...99139100050010

Thats $609.98 and seems to be the best for the price, but I dont know much about computers.

So that's why I figured I'd post this here, where people will obviously know more than I do and will be able to give me good feedback on if it's a good idea, or if they have any better suggestions.

    ---------- Post added 2010-12-09 at 02:37 AM ----------

Edit: And even if it isn't exactly top notch(of course it won't be, but for the price, I figure it can't be too bad) I can always upgrade components in the future.

    None? Come on... Anyone?

How are the specs on the computer?

    ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics card
    AMD Athlon™ II X2 dual-core processor
    4GB memory
    750GB hard drive

It's a facebook/email/porn computer, and not meant for any kind of gaming. Raiding on that will be done at absolute lowest settings to get any kind of acceptable framerate. Both CPU and integrated graphics suck.
Never going to log into this garbage forum again as long as calling obvious troll obvious troll is the easiest way to get banned.
    Trolling should be.

Compared to what I have now, it has to be better. =)

    I have a...
    Dell Inspiron 530S
Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 @ 1.80 GHz

And like I said before, I can always swap out processors when I get more money. The motherboard I have now doesn't allow me to change anything.
    3 GB of RAM

You probably would want to change the processor to a Phenom II x2 555 or Phenom II x4 925 as minimum tho. The Athlon X2s aren't really made for gaming, and definetly not made for CPU intensive games like WoW

Would indeed make quite a difference, but it'll put the price to 689,- instead of the preferred ~600. Can get -10$ if you change the CPU cooler to air instead of liquid (which is what I would do anyway)

These are the specs I went with (keep in mind the price I have to work with: $600ish)

    CoolerMaster HAF 922 Gaming Case
    AMD Athlon™ II X2 260 Dual-Core CPU Processor
    4 GB [2 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory Module
    ASUS M4A77T/USB3 -- AMD 770 Chipset Motherboard
    1 TB HARD DRIVE -- 16M Cache, 7200 RPM, 3.0Gb/s
    Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
NZXT Sentry 2 Touch Screen Fan Controller & Temperature Display

So what do you guys think? Anything I should tweak or swap?

Also, I was wondering how it would work to use a 32" Vizio LCD Hdtv for my screen?

The total came to about $700... A little more than I was wanting, but it works.

I might get flamed, but consider buying a Mac. nearly no virus and beautiful design.

I wish I were able to.

I'd like to have one for school as well, but it's a little out of my price range.

You don't have to overspend on a computer to avoid viruses.

And OP, I'm glad you didn't go with a "Best Buy" computer. It's pretty amazing how much they mark up pre-built computers in stores (although places like iBUYPOWER still mark up a fair deal). I mean literally, you can build (or have a friend build) a computer for half the price most of the time. Even if you throw them $100 for helping, you're saving a ton of money.

Yours will be just fine for WoW. You could have made a slightly better CPU choice, but yours is good enough.

What would you have chosen differently exactly? (And not something that is hugely overpriced, please.)

Anything from the Phenom II line, rather than the Athlon II line.

Mac's are the worst 'computers' when it comes to gaming. I wouldn't advise anyone to play with a Mac, it costs you double and the performance will never be close to what a computer with the same price can offer. My computers with i3 and outperforms my mac with i5 with ease, and they both got simular setups, my ram on my pc is even slower (both got 5750).

Not to mention the high latency, on whatever mac I play my latency tends to be around 240-300, while being connected via the same lan-cable, my computer tends to have just about 30ms & the longer load-screens or the lower fps.

Buy a mac if you plan to use it for college or work, but not if you planning to game with it.

You must of had a crappy Mac. I have been playing on a 15" Macbook Pro since TBC release and I have never had problems with fps or latency. It was a bad day for me if my latency broke 100. FPS wasn't as high as I wanted near the end of Wrath, but the computer was also over 2 years old then also. I think Mac is a great computer to play WoW on.

This exactly also; if you are going to spend more than an hour each day sitting in front of your computer (wich most people do anyways) i would personaly rather look at nice alu design than some ugly black HP...

Be careful here. I don't want this to turn in to a Mac VS PC (or HP) thread.

Yes, this. Although like I said, for the price you paid (are paying), your processor is good enough.

When I build computers, I look at what I'm building them for (which is always WoW if I'm looking for me, lol), and realize that if I skimp on anything, it is NOT going to be my processor. I'd rather spend the extra $50 and be blown away when I load up the game, rather than save that $50 and want to upgrade in a couple months.

But again, you will be just fine with what you're getting...I just feel like the extra ~$50 for a much better processor is ALWAYS more than worth it, especially when you're already over the $300 budget price point.

I look at it this way. If I'm spending $25k on a car, what's the sense in saving $400 by not getting a sun roof. You're going to wish you had it at some point, and if that extra $400 makes you love the car instead of just like it, it's money well spent. I'm super cheap, but when I do decide to spend money, I'm going to get what I really want even if it costs a little bit more.

Im not at home right now, if i was i could give you my full specs.
But i just finished building my brand new beast. It was around $750-$800. If you saved up a bit more you could get a MUCH better computer. for $800 im in dal @ ultra settings with around 75 fps 25 man raids on ultra im gettings around 70-80 fps

If you would like, when i get home i can post my full list of what i bought(newegg)

Also, its not hard at all to build your own computer. I work at a computer tech store and have people everyday requesting me to build them a monster PC, i have to charge 210+ for labor.

Just my two cents here but I built my own (although at a much higher cost) and I have 2 500Gb HDD's. I download a lot of... cinematic adventures and have yet to fill up half of that space. If you don't have, or foresee, the need to have a TON of space you can save a few bucks by using a smaller HDD.

The two biggest things you want to look at, assuming the machine will be used for gaming, are the video card and processor. A beefy card can make a huge difference in performance but price as well.

As stated above though, I would try and get the exact processor you want because it's bothersome to change later (removing interfering equipment, heat sink, and reapplying thermal compound).

As far as your choices though, I've always been an Intel guy, not AMD so I can't comment on their hardware. Machine looks like it will handle WoW just fine though
