i have never heard of it or seen it anywhere, does it really exist? is it legitimate?

It's Augmented Reality - "projecting" computer generated images into a video stream, and having them "interact" with the real world. The Nintendo 3DS can do it, for example - you point the DS' camera at an augmented reality card which has a code on it, readable by the camera. The camera reads the code, and on the screen is displayed a picture of what the camera sees with the 3D object inserted into the scene.

It's not holographic technology in any way, just motion capture, CGI and composition working together in real-time.
