    Consular Tank?

I've read about shadow consular's being tank, but noticed on the main site that they wear "light armor". Has anyone played the beta and know how this works? Is it actually quite good like maybe a druid or something?

if t hey have played the beta they cant release any information to you without breaking NDA, if you really feel like looking into it you can probably easily find a site that breaks NDA but thats not condoned to say the least lol
wait it out for a beta invite to get your info is all i can tell you as of now.
im sure it will all work out though, bioware is a great game company they SHOULD be able to balance out most of the stuff for launch

From what i've read ... the shadow/assassin gets a buff, increasyng ones armor ... similar to the ferals in wow.

I understand that no one can confirm or deny this without breaking the NDA, but I remember one of the devs saying earlier on that Consular tanks would be more evasion tanks than damage soaking ones. This may have changed, its been several builds since I heard that but regardless I'm sure the Shadow Consular can be a good tank or an efficient damage dealer depending on your spec choices.

I think they are going to be off tanks. I don't think I'm breaking NDA by saying this (sorry if it is) but I've seen many gaming websites with devs talking about how most classes can off-tank and off-heal and Assassins can take some hits with certain abilities; however, in instances, I've only seen Juggernauts and Guardians, and I've yet to see a Trooper or Bounty Hunter, taking the tanking roles. I don't have a high level character yet so I'm not so sure.

They can definately be main tanks. Bioware has already stated that the armor differences between the types ( light, edium, heavy) isnt gonna be huge and the shadow/assasin gets talents to increase theirs if they spec for tanking.

All the tanks will be capable of main-tanking. Not sure what exact mechanics assassins/shadows have but there will be something to bring their mitigation to the same level as the other tanks with different types of armor. They are definitely not evasion tanks.

Bioware statet more than once that every class will be an equally effective tank if they specialise into it.

Yes, Jedi Shadows can be tanks. You have to spec for it though to be effective. But, even without going up the tanking tree, you will have abilities and buffs that will allow you to spot tank if needed.

If this breaks NDA, please delete.

Indeed, al the tanking specs will be viable maintanks, it's just a matter of your playstyle.

Basically Assassin's have an ability 'Dark Charge' this increases armor by 150%, threat gen by 50% and gives a 50% chance on hit to deal a small amount of damage and healing(again taking the EV demo as a benchmark, it was dealing around 30 damage, and 60 healing, critting for 90), basically taking Sith Warriors as the base, Assassin's will have sslliigghhttllyy higher Avoidance(don't forget the spell they showed us rriigghhtt back when they announced Assassin's could tank, which increased Block chance by 15%) and slightly less armor (~5% more/less for each), then they will have a little self healing to make up for any potential small spikes they MIGHT take (Overcharged Saber is another move they've show us, which increases the healing of Dark Charge by 300%! sadly it's only for 10sec every 2 mins )

overall they sound by far the most fun tanks to play , which is why I plan to make one my main
copied directly from the discussion in the supertopic that just came up in short Consular/Inquisitors will be MORE than capable to Maintanking anything (think of them like DK's but with block and with boss that don't hit you for lolinstagib amounts.)

I'll believe it when I see it. Show me the spreadsheet that backs up this statement because it has never happened. There is always a min/max sheet to show that atleast one tank spec always comes out on top.

They need to seriously get rid of this silly NDA. Hopefully they will do it in November.

Watch the video of the The Eternity Vault operation. In the video one of the two tanks is a Sith Assassin, while they call him the offtank he's tanking the boss just fine at the end of the video when the boss is killed.

Yeah but with what kind of gear and enhancements. For all we know he is max'd out like their is no tomorrow and over gears the encounter. Also first boss in any raid has typically only ever been a gear check as a gating mechanism.

As others have stated Bioware said that all three tanking classes will be equally viable to fulfill the job of main tank. If this is not the case then you can expect Bioware to fix it at some point.

According to one article I've read, you will be able to start doing the base operations in normal mode in your max level leveling gear. No need to grind Flash Points before heading into Ops. Looking for the article and will post a link if I can find it again.

    Edit: Here's the link - http://darthhater.com/2011/07/29/pc-...on-operations/

This in recent times is a false statement. Advantages between tank specs and classes is usually encounter specific. I would take a guess that this will be the same in TOR, all the classes can maintank, but certain inherent abilities will make one slightly better than the others on a specific encounter.

OT: If speaking in wow terms, I'd say it play close to a mix of a DK and an enhance shaman. Its pretty damn cool.

The Assassin has a weapon-buff that she/he can unleash every 15 seconds. Also they have a buff with 10 stacks raising your chance to block (or sth. like that) ... it all seams similar to the tank paladin in early wrath.

Here's the video where i have this info (hope it doesn't violate the NDA): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqEhuvlvfVw ... its in german but the spell descriptions shown in the vid. are in english.

€: In the walkthrough video from the eternety vault ... the assassin is called the "second tank" ... they never said offtank. And yeah, there is a difference between those two terms.

It has been said several times, that all three tank-classes (including the Consular) will be viable as maintank (yes, there was this "event" where a certain community-manager called them off-tank, but later apologized explaining he was not knowing so much about tanking and that he was wrong). Don't think the exact mechanics surrounding this class is known, asides from that Consulars are "strongly force-based".

    Georg:
All tank specs in the game are designed to function as a main tank. There are no 'off tanks' by design in the game, that would involve players intentionally choosing such a role by speccing hybrid.
    Georg:
By design, all tank capable ACs can spec to be fully capable main tanks.

There are no 'off tanks' unless you intentionally spend your skill points into different trees.
    SR:
As you'll see from Georg's latest posts, I did mis-speak. My tanking experience is limited (in MMOs generally; as I said in the interview, I'm a DPS lad) and I did point that out in the interview.

I think my confusion came from playing a Sith Assassin in our Eternity Vault demo many, many times, who was specced to be an off-tank, not main tank. However, as Georg has now corrected me on, that's not a limitation of the AC, it's a choice on the part of the player.

Sorry if I confused everyone for a minute. This is what happens when you ask questions of the Community Manager that are better suited to the development team. It's not their fault that they can't make it to every show, we want to keep them hard at work on the game.

I'd still hope they'd release a video of a Consular/Assassin clearly Maintanking, to get rid of the bad assumptions some people have about them already...
