It's yet to get me noticed by Squenix, it is against their TOS afterall, but I'll never say never.
I wouldn't say they have more to them than a White Mage, just they're different to a White Mage. White Mages have stronger healing cooldowns, where the Scholar has better preventative cooldowns. They've both got about the same number of overall abilities and both can fill any healing role in a group.
As for opinions, mine are mostly negative, but that's coming from a long time player. It used to have a lot more flexability in it's damage and more specialised tools. Over time, those have been stripped away to make it something more generic. I wouldn't say it's bad, just not as good as it used to be.
It might be different for a newer player - Its got a lot of unique tools that other healers don't, has a pet and some pretty cool utility. Those might be the kind of things that appeal to you, they may not.
My suggestion would be to give it a try, see how you like it. I know that's a tame take on it, you know what you enjoy in a job more than I do.
