New build via AMD holiday deal, help!

    Hello there.

I'm thinking of doing this build, just curious how it will run. My current (Foxcom MB, 4g DDR2, GTX550TI, Phenom iiX3 720 BE) runs Skyrim on high, fairly well. But I'm looking for a PC that could handle ultra, but I'd rather it just play seamlessly at high.

    Micro Center Deal: http://www.microcenter.com/specials/...ndlePROMO.html
    Build Idea:
    MoBO: M4N68T-M V2 Socket AM3 630a mATX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...%20630a%20mATX
    CPU: phenom™ II X6 1055T http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0334812
RAM: 4/8g (IDK which) DDR3 (have)
HD: Caviar Blue 7200 RPM 500g sata3 (have)
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 550ti (have)
    PSU: 535w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817226003 (have)
    Case: Antec 900 case (have)

So with w7 install discs, and upgrade to 64 bit from 32 bit (have) and $149.99 pre-tax I can upgrade from 3 cores to 6, and upgrade mobo from DDR2/IDE to DDR3/SATA3. GPU/PSU/RAID will be added after the holidays.

    Good deal?

    What do you guys think?

No point in getting more cores. More cores are essentially pointless in gaming, quad cores or even the i3 2100 beat virtually all of AMDs offerings. I just built an i3 system with a 560 ti stable 60fps in every game so far, no point in wasting money on the AMD chip.

So the processor isn't worth the upgrade?

I know mine isn't great, but I wanted to up-date the machine so I can have a nice budget build that will last.

I'm assuming you're talking about the AMD bundle (buy an AMD cpu and get a mobo free). it's not a bad deal imo if you're not going to be doing crazy stuff on your computer (seeing as the mobo isn't top-end).

also, you probably don't need more than 4gb of ram, but if ram is cheap enough, get 8gb (seen some for $30 or so recently, pretty cheap). absolutely no reason not to get 8gb if it's cheap.

Trying to see if anyone knows anything about these particular processors? Is the x6 worth getting over the x4?
And are these mobo not good for gaming? The reviews I'm reading aren't really informative enough.

I have currently an AMD set up, so I'm not sure I want to move over to Intel as it's very pricy.

Is my build good enough to run Skyrim on ultra?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I need to try and decide what I'm doing before these deals fade away.

Personally I'd go for Intel, the i5 2500k is the best value for money processor on the market. It's reasonably cheap and runs extremely well, and can support heavy overclocking if you have the heatsink/motherboard for it.

the x6 isn't really worth getting over the x4. not for just everyday use and gaming. if you did photo/video editing, get the x6; if you don't, get the x4.

the mobo is ok for gaming - not the best, but it'll get the job done.

not too sure about this seeing as I don't play skyrim/know much about it. I'm assuming you could play on high though.

intel's definitely better than amd but at a higher price obviously. up to you - can't go wrong with the i5 2500k.

The AMD 1100T 6 core is a very good performer and outdoes the AMD quads in everything. It's even competitive with the I5's in gaming. The I3's don't compete well. Where the Intel processors are markedly better is in things like video encoding and processing where it's features really kick in. In gaming they're not much better than the AMD's and AMD will give more bang for the buck.

Evident by Anandtech's figures which I have never trusted. I have seen other tests where the 2 chips are nearly identical in gaming tests.

First time I hear anyone say they don't trust Anandtech, not that i don't believe you. What are the other test sites showing them equal (in some games)?

The only reason I don't trust them is because they don't show enough different results for actual gaming performance, just a lot of benchmarks. Tom's Hardware does a better job for gamers in my opinion but that's the only one I can think of right now.
