It depends on their tastes, I guess...
RTS: Starcraft II, Warcraft III, Civilization IV
Single-player RPG: Elder Scrolls III-V (Morrowind - Skyrim), Dragon Age I
MMORPG: World of Warcraft, SW:ToR
FPS: Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Team Fortress II, Half-Life II, Bioshock
Puzzle: Portal II

Didn't see the PC only part, so exclude Zelda and replace it with The Witcher 2. Although that would be my Top 5.

Terraria/Minecraft
BF3 or MW3 (don't get both, and don't buy the PC versions)
In reality, there's no reason not to have Terraria and/or Minecraft. They're both cheap, great, and have online and mod support if you get bored with the normal game.
