Official minecraft server?

Are there any servers hosted by the creators of the game themselves or are they all pretty much player ran servers? I had always thought that when the game was officially released they would host there own servers (have a server selection like in wow or mmo's or the option to play single player).

Mojang do not currently run a server - probably just as well because with them spending thier time on game development, there would be very few people with little time to put towards its upkeep. Pretty much all servers are player run (or by other companies)

If mojang offered the rights to play on a dedicated server for $2.99/month whitelist i would definitely pay it.
