I am nearly sure you couldn't do that, atleast in RED. Some guy kept escorting me to rock whenever I tried to pass and go to Mt Moon.

The portable games were never particularly hard... You just caught the Pokémon you knew were good, and powered down everything. Elite Four was a sinch even if you didn't have a pokémon in your team over 45, as long as you bought enough Full Restores and Revives. After that you just went and caught mewtwo and cheesed it. G/S/C was even easier, it was never hard at all.

But the Pokémon Stadium games for the N64, hooooh boy. THOSE games are what you could call hard. While Prime Cup was sorta cheesable if you brought your team full of lvl 100 uber pokémon and just powered down the competition, Poké Cup (lvl 50-55 Pokémon) was like being torn between hope and despair. The only way to win for sure, is to study each opponent (by losing multiple times to witness their strategies), memorize what specific strategies they used, what moves their Pokémon had, and then do your best to build a team that had a potential counter strategy to all of them. While it might've been somewhat easy to power down round 1 of Poké Cup, round 2 is a pure Poké nightmare. 1 simple mistake, 1 simple turn where the RNG is not in your favor, and you may, and will lose the match. Every single turn couts. It's like a game of chess, but with the destructive chances of your turn being wasted (attacks missing, failing, not having effects, your Pokémon flinching, status impairments). It's almost a perfect balance of skill and luck, that will make you scream in fury because the game simply refuses to let you win.

Mankey and his low kicks are key. Back in the RED/BLUE days...I always chose Charmander but I would always capture Nidoran and double kick that mofo to oblivion. Reading this thread....and the posts....you're making me wanting to find my gameboy and play it........God dammit I'm going to do it

I always chose Squirtle for my starter in Red/Blue.

Just grabbed a Mankey in Yellow for my Brock destroyer.

And this is why Butterfree has been my favorite Pokemon for over a decade.

    And now I feel old.
I mostly play fighting games these days.

Every time someone makes a 1st gen pokemon game thread I get welled up. Man more hours in blue than WoW or any other game could ever dream of. Tell you what though, HeartGold and SoulSilver are special special games. Really captured the glory of the old times.
