Will GW2 be more taxing than SW:TOR?

I'm worried about the server vs server PvP they have planned. Am I going to have an amazing system to play this without stuttering? I just came back from SW:TOR's Ilum debacle and from what I've read about GW2, server vs server PvP will have just as many players if not more. I've also read that GW2 is developing this game on low systems... but I don't know how much I believe.

I'm playing on this: http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-08622LU.../dp/B00519CCK6 if anyone cares to look at my system.

    Intel 2nd Generation Core i5 - 2410M
    6GB DDR3 Memory
    750GB HDD Storage, DVD±R/RW
15.6" HD (1366 x 768 pixels) LED backlight, 220 nit, 16:9 aspect ratio, NVIDIA Geforce GT555M Discrete Graphics
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
And no, I can't get a desktop. I move around often. So what do you guys think?
Why am I back here, I don't even play these games anymore

The problem with the internet is parallel to its greatest achievement: it has given the little man an outlet where he can be heard. Most of the time however, the little man is a little man because he is not worth hearing.

With lower graphics settings...maybe. A lot of it is dependent on how the engine holds up on different setups, but from what we've seen from demo's, there's a good chance with that setup you'll be fine.

most indications are that GW2 will not require as beefy acomputer as TOR. So if you can handle tor GW2 should be just fine. However they still have not released any system requirements/recomendations so its all guesswork.

    Who is John Galt?

Guild Wars boasted a fairly well-optimized graphical engine which allowed even lower-spectrum machines to run it smoothly even at launch. So far it looks like GW2 will do the same.

What I have heard from links in other threads is that ANet are having to scour EBay to buy video cards for their demo systems, as the cards they're using (and presumably, this means what they're aiming at requirements wise) are no longer in production.

Having had a look at your system, and making a guess based on the above tidbit of information, I'd say your processor, memory and hard drive are fine, but it appears to me that the graphics adapter in the notebook may use shared memory from the main pool. This is actually an "old school" way of doing things, not sure if it's even done nowadays (but may be), what makes me think it is being done that way is that the technical information lists the graphics adapter as having 1Mb memory with absolutely no other information - whether that is because it's "default" information automatically filled in by Amazon's site because they don't have the correct information on hand/entered, I do not know.

Fairly obviously 1Mb of memory on a graphics adapter is insufficient in every way, and I therefore wonder whether the adapter "steals" memory from the main pool (perhaps dynamically) to reach usable levels. If this is the case, I think you might be in a spot of bother - graphics adapters that I'm used to seeing where this was done tended (by nature of the speed of the memory mostly) to be too slow for most gaming type applications, and it may well be so in this case too.

We would need to look for further information on the graphics adapter your machine has before making a conclusion on this issue - and also, bear in mind too that any "judgement" made today on whether a machine is good, bad or great at GW2 is based on very much guesswork and very little fact - until ANet give us a set of requirements, any "decision" made today could easily end up being overturned when the full facts are known.

It will probably be bigger then star wars since it's not subscription based and there we're alot of people who didn't like the single player feel of Star Wars.

EDIT: When you said taxing I tought you meant taxing on the servers. Sorry.

I havn't played Star Wars myself but I heard that you need a pretty good computer and some luck to make it work, it simply wouldn't run on some computers.

Tbh, I have yet to see an MMO that could/can handle 100's of people in the same place without lag and people getting major performance issues. All dev's from various companies (Blizzard, Anet, Bioware etc) come up with claims that their game will have these epic big battles and when it comes down to executing they fail.

I'm sorry to say but I don't belive Anet can make it any deferent then any other company when it comes to this. And no matter what people say about Anet testing on fosilcomputers I still belive that GW2 will be quite taxing on your pc. I usually have no problems as I run a near high-end rig, but alot of people don't. To give an example. I'm playing SWTOR atm and my fps is around 100+ anywhere except on the fleet at peak hours and on Ilum when larger grps of people show up to have an epic fight.

So don't get your hopes up mate. As said, I have yet to see any company, incl. Anet (regarding GW1), delivering this promis.

I don't think WvWvW will be like Wintergrasp where it's just one big clusterfuck. We're talking about 3 huge areas attacking each other :P

if you can handle swtor you will handle guild wars fine

GW2 uses software called Umbra. It causes your computer only to render stuff you can see.
I dont know if swtor uses this, but if it doesn't I'm sure GW2 will run with your comp just fine.

System Requirements - Recently we found out a tidbit of info regarding system requirements, ANet has been testing the game on video cards so old that they need to get it on special order because it's no longer manufactured. Looking at Newegg that means those GPUs are from around 2002/2003. I've also seen them say that they really don't even develop their games on high end hardware so that they don't forget about the lower end of the hardware spectrum. The GW2 engine is a modified version of the GW1 engine and if they manage to allow people to even run the game on such old hardware, I'll be amazed. Most games these days have minimum specs of 3 year hardware, the possibility of 8 years is mind-boggling.

Think about that for a second, the min video card specs will be around 8-9 years old, I can't name a game that scales back that far. As others have said GW1/GW2 uses a tech called Umbra that only renders what the camera can see keeping FPS extremely high.

SWTOR's engine is terribly optomized. People with great rigs are still having issues with it. The coding and net code feel like they are going through a meat grinder. ANet on the other hand is doing their best to make sure the game runs smoothly on as many machines as possible. I really hope they do a better job. I can't even tell you how disappointed I was in SWTOR, and while WoW might be slightly better, for their graphics it really should run better than it does. I am really hoping that ANet can figure out how to just make the game pretty and run smoothly at the same time. Seems to be a lost art with some games now-a-days.

Really don't think there's any need to worry, you can look at any convention footage and see that it's running butter smooth even during fights with Tequatl and 30+ people on screen. I haven't seen a single piece of footage of the game where the FPS has gotten choppy and I've seen TONS. We shall see when 100+ people are on screen, but so far so good.

I'm at work, so I can't go all out on digging through websites and stuff for the proof but I'm very confident that they've said that machines that were used at conventions to show the game had gtx260 graphic card on maxed out settings. That's pretty impressive engine optimization.

The devs have already said if u can run GW1 fine you can run GW2 fine.

But i am also worried about massive amounts of players in the screen in WvWvW.

But i also know that sometimes its not better to follow the huge crowds if you want to enjoy all the content WvWvW has to offer. As you can form hunting parties with a few of your friends and capture smaller objectives away from massive crowds, raid escorts across the different maps, Jump traveling parties, guard siege machines, raid villages, farms, and resource areas, and even attack NPC guards that are said to be throughout the map doing various things for each enemy server.

There is plenty of stuff to do in WvWvW if your computer cant take the massive fights that will be going on near keeps and fortresses.

I don't think WvWvW will be like a big ant colony (English isn't my primary language so I hope that makes sense xD), but more like a very very big BG.

Tbh, I'd love if it was this sort of "big ant colony" that you're talking about. God, I'd love a epic battle. A huge battle like in the movies from middleage Would feel pretty epic with that sort of huge fight

100 mesmers in a WvWvW, just think about it. 100--> 400 (300?) with their images, that'll for sure create chaos on the battlefield haha

From what we've heard, the requirements for GW2 should not be as high as that of TOR. You should have no trouble running GW2. The problem will be how well the servers can manage the large number of people that may be present in WvWvW, which judging by the Umbra software and the optimizing being done for GW2, shouldn't be too terrible.

This article actually explains a lot: http://www.heroengine.com/2011/11/he...eets-starwars/
It seems Bioware threw a fat cheque at Hero for source code rights to a beta version of the engine and built the game upon that.

still the most fun pvp I have ever had in an MMO (And I have played a lot) It looks like total chaos, but there was some serious strategy that went into defending and attacking guild castles.
