    Name the numbers

    Morning,

As i was watching some videos on youtube, i noticed one quite interesting thing. And ive thought it would be interesting to get some "statistics" on it. I will reveal the purpose of it a bit later Hope we can get some people posting here!

    Please name these numbers:
    32
    938
    1215
    12500
    319439

Also please post your continent and country
Education and age are optimal, but not forced

    Example:
    Code:
    a) 1 - One
    b) 27 - Twenty seven
    c) 112 - One hundred and twelve

    South America, Brazil
    78, Ph.D.
If you wish, you can use different numbers, e.g. instead of 32, 64. What matters is the same amount of digits in each number.

Thanks for your participation and time!

You only use "and" when you are going to a decimal

    112 would be one-hundred twelve

112.21 would be one-hundred twelve and twenty-one hundredths

    32899043: thirty-two million, eight hundred ninty-nine thousand fourty-three (yes, i do tend to pause after a two-digit or more million+, like 38 429 355, or 349 594 320 or 25 857 453 929 etc)

very much depends where you are from and how you are educated. To me one-hundred twelve sounds wrong. One hundred and twelve (112) flows a bit better.

    32 - thirty two
938 - nine hundred thirty eight
1215 - one thousand two hundred fifteen
12500 - twelve thousand five hundred
319439 - three hundred nineteen thousand four hundred thirty nine

    In italian:
    32 - trentadue
    938 - novecentotrentotto
    1215 - milleduecentoquindici
    12500 - dodicimilacinquecento
    319439 - trecentodiciannovemilaquattrocentotrentanove

"e" are considered as points (we use commas instead of points also, even if both forms are correct) so
2.9 "two point nine" will translate in "due e nove" or "due virgola nove" or "2,9"

first is if i'm saying them to myself, or to someone else to write down

second is if it needs to be known as a number (a number of things etc)

Doesn't matter if it sounds better or not, and = . when speaking or writing out numbers in English. You can see this when you write a check, you don't write nine hundred and thirty eight because that would mean $900.38. Instead you write nine hundred thirty eight and 00/100, or just nine hundred thirty eight.

when you write a cheque in england, you write nine hundred and thirty eight pounds and 30 pence

could be the part of england i'm from, but removing the and always seemed a more american way of saying numbers

same here, sounds weird without the "and".
"nine hundred thirty eight" just sounds weird compared to "nine hundred and thirty eight"

    Thanks for participation everyone.

I was wondering if the way people name numbers, was somehow cultural, age, degree related. Main number was

    1215 - 4 digit number
Most say "One thousand, two hundred and fifteen"
But some not, instead the count it by hundreds "Twelve hundred and fifteen"

That was really new for me =?

Was hopping someone would say 12500 as "One hundred and twenty five hundreds" :[
