Issues with Multiplayer

I've downloaded the server tool from the MC website and started it, but I can't connect to it =S After some googling I found that I had to "port forward" 25565 or something and so I did, using some guide. This didn't change a thing. I found some random server to see if I could perhaps connect to another it, and I could, without any problems. I asked my mate to put up a server but could not connect to it. All I get is the "java.net.SocketException: Connection reset" message after being stuck at "logging in" for a while.

Anything I could do? =S I really want to play with my mate on our server, without some other random ppl

Easiest way is probably with Hamachi. Theres a lot of good youtube videos on it. I used it for a while and it worked perfectly.
