Comment Link Always Leads to End of Thread

This isn't a complaint, per se, but I've always been curious about something. Whenever I'm on the Home page and read/scroll through the news, I like to take a look at what others have to say on it. Clicking the Comment link always takes me directly to page 6/6, 12/12, 37/37, or whatever.

Is there a particular reason we're always brought to the final responses, and not the beginning of the thread? It's only a minor inconvenience, but it plays out like a spoiler, seeing the 12th stage of quoted discussion instead of the initial post or comment that led to it.

As we can respond to a post from any point in the thread, it never made sense (to me) to start at the end.

Am I alone on this?

Indeed, it does, which is what I never understood. Visit any forum, choose any thread. If it hasn't been viewed by you, you're taken to post #1. Doing the same thing from the Comments link on the News section acts differently.
