I think we'll need a new gaming laptop

Meh, just bought my son an HP G7-1150 for college, now GW2 is coming out. Pretty much no chance that's even going to RUN it, much less run it decently.

Guess wifey gets his laptop, and we get a new one for him.

Anyone have any good suggestions for budget gaming laptop that can run GW2 (I'll need to buy 2 of them...)?

    Thx for any advice....

It would help if you would put what your budget is...

Depends on your budget. The ASUS G series laptops are really good though. The G55 (15 inch) and G75 (17 inch) are supposed to be coming out sometime this month.

    Budget would help.

Also, is a self-assembled desktop completely out of the question? If no, check here: http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...-Sample-Builds

No offense... but buying a laptop with an integrated graphics unit was the first mistake for trying to play a brand new video game on (Graphics Processor Intel HD Graphics
Memory Allocation Technology Dynamic Video Memory Technology 5.0
Total Available Graphics Memory 1969 MB)

Don't patrionize; the laptop s/he bought was obviously not intended for gaming. ~Marest

Would like very much to be under $1k each (since we need 2). Not sure if that's reasonable. I'd guess the absolute minimum we'd have to spend would be $750-$800?

EDIT: no offense taken, but yeah it was only supposed to be a college laptop for general use and SOME gaming, not really anything fancy. Sure, WoW would probably run on it but I think WoW would run on a casio calculator.

EDIT2: goal is a laptop, I know I can build a great desktop rig for $600 or so, but the point is to still ostensibly provide them with laptops for general use, but also something that we can play gw2 together on while they're at school.

Wait, you need two gaming laptops under $1000? I don't think that is possible to be honest, you'd be better of getting two desktops:
    Extreme Budget Gaming 450
    MoBo: ASRock H61M-VS$54.99
    CPU: Intel Pentium G850$87.99
    RAM: Crucial 1333MHz 2x2GB$22.99
    GPU: MSI GTX 460$139.99
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 320GB$74.99
    PSU: Antec VP-450W$39.99 Review
    Case: NZXT Source 210$39.99
    --------------------------------------------------
    Estimated Total Price – $461

    Recommended for:
Budget gaming build that can handle most
newer games. Offers great value for money.
With Windows that would end up costing you $1100 for two systems, both very capable of running Guild Wars 2 at at least medium settings without major issues.

    Edit: Sorry, missed the "each".

He said he would want to spend about $1000 each.

You can get your hands on reasonably priced gaming laptops there.

Be sure to double check that the one you pick comes with the OS installed, on some of them you have to choose to have the OS on it as an option or they'll come clean.

Thanks very much, they quickly pointed me to http://www.xoticpc.com/force-pbl21-c...21-p-3086.html which is pretty nice for $800.

I'm thinking I might have a couple of available Win7 64bit licenses at work, so no OS is fine for me too.

    THANKS ALL.

lol at the infraction, I started with NO OFFENSE, and the reply stating I was attacking was even more explaining the reason it wouldn't play GW2. I figured at the original post stating that it wouldn't run gw2 that they wanted a machine that WOULD play it, and purchased a machine intending on the use. The post AFTER I posted stated they intended it to be just a workhorse in which time I got hit because they stated it wasn't technically purchased for gaming ONLY. Oh well lol, I thought I would post NO OFFENSE and state what they would need (an ACTUAL stand alone GPU, not a integrated graphics unit on a computer to play games proper), doesn't help..?

It was no infraction, just a small reminder to play nice. ~Marest

For laptops you would need an older model to get what you want most likely. I have a 2009 laptop, sure it was 900 dollars, but the stat's are double what this computer can handle. And that's a machine from 2009!! Laptops get newer, and the processors usually get cheaper and more powerful as well as the ram, and harddrive space... but companies still go cheap on the actual graphics units. Most of the time a lot of laptops are integrated, and they are terrible in comparison to an actual stand alone graphics unit. Their sadly will be no way to spend 1k on a brand new out of "best buy" type system with GPU's. They will be integrated, unless they are some floor model that has been beaten into the ground (don't buy one). If you need a laptop that has the power for the money I would check out "unopened" older systems from companies or ebay or whatever you typically like to purchase computers from. That's just IMO. If you can afford it of course buy - ya know - some alien ware or something hahahaha

FYI all. Just a followup in case anyone is interested.

I stopped at Microcenter and (relying on their inattentive sales staff and open internet connections) checked some systems there.

Many needed passwords to open up, but one in the ballpark didn't.

    (Dell XPS15 with a Nvidia Gt525M) - was on sale for $999

    Checking against GW2 on http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/intro.aspx

It blew away the GW2 standards, passing with flying colors. No where near minimum spec.

So anyway, that confirms the 525M is great as far as anyone can tell before GW2 is actually released.

Checking against http://www.notebookcheck.net/Compari...rds.130.0.html the 525M is rated down at 29%.

Considering that the PL21 mentioned further up has a 540M (rated at 33% on the same page) I'm pretty confident that 540m machine will run well. (Obviously, it's not as simple as video card, but that's a good chunk of it.)

    This just in: http://www.slashgear.com/amd-announc...ries-24224375/

You'll probably have to fork over some $$ for it, but it should be available in several laptops in time for the start of fall classes.

I played the beta on a G7 1150 laptop which was considered sub-marginal according to the gameplay anticipated specs.

It was very playable, probably 20-25fps, with some stutter on loading areas and loading for/after cinematics. Once a zone was loaded tho? Fine.

Even played some PVP and did ok although a couple of lag spikes killed me - I heard reports that was widespread for people in much better systems too.

So all in all, the HP G7 1150 - I doubt I'd try to play competitive PVP with it, but if I was at grandma's house just killing time? Sure, I'd play with that.
