I feel the experiance was quite stable at times, even with thousands of people logging in at the same time. It's quite possible that Zenimax was stress testing servers themselves, rendering them vulnerable to crashes and such when we were playing - hence the problems. If they are testing the servers, they have to test how they would work in the worst case scenario.
Anyway, my 2 cents on ESO itself: a ton of fun, that's for sure. I've played a couple of MMOs besides WoW, and only this one has anything more to offer than, say, RIFT, SWtOR or GW2. Combat is quite cool, graphics are amazing for the requirements, crafting system is very intuitional and well explained (Goat Bone Soup, yum), FPP view works stunningly well in MMO enviroment.
What kinda feels weird, aside of obvious "hey, it's just beta" bugs and holes, is surely the system itself. I always play an archer type in those games, but for some reason the class system barely supports such a choice. And class system in TES game feels bad in general. Was it so hard for them to simply leave players with weapons and a couple of general skills and allow you to play with everything, eventually making you go in a certain direction by morphing certain skills? It would be much more logical than just blindly choosing "Dragon Knight" path and locking yourself to it.
Um, okay? I played on the SWTOR launch, and it was almost entirely smooth. Their problem had nothing to do with being overwhelmed on servers or anything of that sort, but that they kept adding so many damn servers that the playerbase became diluted from the start. ESO doesn't have servers in the same sense that SWTOR did, so it'll avoid that.
What you should be hoping for is that it doesn't do a Simcity/Diablo III launch. Today's a taste-test of the Simcity debacle, so it's good they're testing that and (hopefully) fixing it
Odd, my latest failed attempt at trying to log in gave me a message that "I'm not entitled to play on this realm". Anyone else seen this one yet?
Never mind - I see they took the server offline again.

looks like the server has gone lala again
The server is down for maintenance.
Stress test is where they force their servers, to the numbers of people online... not the other way around. The number of people online, isnt what they are testing (or they would do open beta). The test "how many people can the servers handle" will be later today.
The slow login, etc... is wanted. Also, the only quest i found, that is bugged, was the intended one, to stop people from moving away from the only zone available (the main story one). They aren't doing tests to content. They are testing how the megaserver handles parties, how it handles at max capacity (stipulated by them), etc. If they were testing content (quests, mobs, etc) they would open new areas.
There are smaller bugs, but, hands down, this is the smoothest closed beta/stress test i have ever participated on (one of many).
EDIT: i agree with you on your last sentence. It is gonna be a more selective MMORPG... and i am soooo glad about that.
I've tried the beta for a little while, and I have to agree it looks very good ( when actually playing, the character screen looks bad for some reason )and has way less lag than most of today's MMo's, even WoW.
On the other hand, I just couldn't find any will to get at a high level to truly experience this game.
I wish it will have a big success, and become a good competitor on the market. I think the mmorpg scene has become stale because of the lack of competition, especially on the higher-end of the spectrum. ( against World of Warcraft )
I didn't have a problem with SWTOR's launch.
Ironically, probably the worst launch I've ever been involved with was WoW.
Servers should be back up by 3:30PM EST.
