The 180-Degree Turn on the Zandalari

I find it rather difficult to resolve how quickly the Zandalari went from a benevolent group of cross-factional trolls to a threat to all of Azeroth mid-expansion in Cat. When Cat first went live, I went to the small islands in Stranglethorn to see if there were any remnants of the group I spent literally weeks grinding rep with. I wasn't given much in the way of lore as to why they suddenly turned malicious, but now theyre a recurring villain that will again pop up in MoP? Its kind of like that quest where you run beer kegs to Brewfest only to find out the guys drinking the beer wear brown shirts and want more 'lebensraum.'

They were never really benevolent. In short, we were used. They wanted to get back on top, back to being the tribe who runs the troll empire, but to do that they had to beat everyone else down first. They conned us into doing their dirty work for them.
I found I enjoyed the game significantly more when I stopped paying attention to all the people on the forums telling me how much I am supposed to hate it
All this complaining is simply further proof that Blizzard could send each and every player a real-life wish-granting flying unicorn carrying a solid gold plate of chocolate chip cookies wrapped in hundred dollar bills, and someone would whine that Blizzard sucks for not letting them choose oatmeal raisin.

There are plenty of parallels in history where a society is on a low ebb and all it takes is one carismatic leader that says the right words ....

Once I killed a wolf in Darkshire and it dropped a two-handed sword. Why would this animal carry such a weapon with it? I never got over that.

It was explained that they are basically Troll supremacists. They saw the threat of the Gurubashi and teamed up with the Horde and Alliance to get rid of them (We killed the Amani of our own accord).

Now, after the Drakkari fell to their own stupidity, they've realized that the Troll civilization is on the brink of collapse, so they've dispatched agents to the destroyed Troll cities in order to begin rebuilding the Troll Empire.

    Thing is, they aren't evil.

The only reason we're attacking them is because the Horde and Alliance don't want another superpower on Azeroth-- and Vol'jin got his panties in a bundle when they asked him to leave the Horde.

there were nice zandalari on zul'drak, so it's more like one year lol

but basically what happened was: the cataclysm.

faced with the iminent threat of world destruction the zandalari came to the conclusion that the best way to survive would be to go back to how the world once was: trolls rulling almost everywhere with a huge empire.

to that end, the alliance and the horde are in the way lol

trolls are really anti-social beings. most troll tribes will kill anyone who comes across them unless they are from the same tribe. the zandalari accepted outside help because they needed help lol

The Lore I recall Metzen on someone throwing out there, is that the events of Cata freaked out the Zandalari, to such a degree that they felt it necassary to re-establish the old empires, which is why they had the meeting and Vo'jin said it wasn't the way to do things. How much of that has been written into the actual Lore I dunno

People seem to confuse "Nice" and "Friendly" with "Non-Hostile"

The Zandalari were never nice, nor friendly. They weren't hostile, for a time though. Respected (ie: Exalted Rep) doesn't necessarily mean you're friends.

At Blizzcon 2011 it was said that something was driving them, and we'll find that out in Mists of Pandaria. So I guess it will be tied to the Pandaren in some way? Maybe the Sha.

I have a feeling that when the mists dropped, the Sha expanded out of Pandaria and the Zandalari were fooled to think Sha are Loa.
