Debatable. The show never explains it, but there are scenes of Saiyans temporarily being in space. Bardock is a good example, but then there's the "are movies canon" deal. Since that one happened in the past and can easily fit in the timeline, it's safe to say it's canon(plus it happened in a flashback). But, given that, it doesn't matter. Saiyans are known for being able to hold their breath for extended periods of time, as noted by Goku's fight with Frieza when he gets dunked a couple times. It could be assumed in the short scenes where we see them in space (Vegata standing on his pod blowing up the bug planet, on the way to Earth), that they are only able to do so because they're just able to hold their breath long enough. Also since it was definitely nearby, it could have been possible that Bardock and Frieza's ship weren't technically in space, but just high up into Planet Vegeta's atmosphere. It would be hard to breathe, but again, better lungs as Saiyans.

So it's more like 50/50.

Probably. Also, there are scenes of Goku that I recall where he starts drowning underwater. Saiyans definitely have to breathe. There is also the chance that they use some kind of energy field, like Broly does to move from planet to planet.
