I second this. And if you haven't heard anything about the game before it is only good. Makes it even better. I think this game is a great experience for pretty much anyone, though it is way better when going in blind. I feel very lucky that I picked it up after a knowing minimal about it.

ARMA. It's a realistic (borderline simulator) FPS set during the Cold War, during a fictional skirmish between Russian and NATO forces on an island. It's realistic; if you are shot in the vitals by a sniper you didn't even see because you walked into his line of sight, too bad you die instantly. No video game health meter or regen nonsense like Medal of Honor or CoD. You hop between three different protagonists: an infantry soldier (later promoted to a squad leader), an infiltrator behind enemy lines, and a tank commander. You can also command the troops under your command, mount & blade style. The story is okay.

If you decide to play the first ARMA game, you'll need to readjust your keybinds. Also, be warned that the first game has a terrible save system. See, you can only save ONCE per mission. Your save is basically your checkpoint. This become extremely aggravating on long missions where there are many, many, many times you can die. I spent like 6 or 7 hours on the convoy escort mission (even though if you do it right, it can be down in about 20 minutes) simply because I kept dying (and losing my squadmates) to snipers.

Fortunately, later games fix the save system. If you play on normal difficulty of ARMA 3, you can go into the difficulty settings and turn on unlimited saves, which is good because at the end of the day these games are best played by savescumming.

    Titanfall 2. Outstanding campaign.

I should add, one of my absolute favorite games growing up was Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, such a shame Bounty Hunter was such a joke in comparison.

Wondering about games like CoD (do they all have good stories?), Insurgency: Sandstorm, CS:GO (does this game have a campaign?), never heard much about Battlefield's story, thoughts? Is Black Mesa story-driven? I do believe Halo has a strong story, I recall, don't see any reason why I shouldn't try this. Didn't know it came out for PC!

    FPS games I own:

L4D2, years ago I played part of the story, never completed it. Might start over, I remember enjoying myself. Though, I kind of want something a little more FPS vs FPS, I think. We'll see!
All the Bioshock games. Watched Jesse Cox's playthrough of Infinite back in the day, idk if I want to play it, tbh.
Borderlands 2, not sure Borderlands is for me.
Crysis 2: Max Edition. Forget when I got this? Humble Bundle maybe?
    All the DOOM games.
    FEAR 2 and 3. (No.)
Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Not really my cup of tea, I don't think.
    Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
    Just Cause 2
    Mass Effect 1 & 2
    Medal of Honor (Single Player)
Metro 2033 and Last Light (Redux) I remember trying 2033 and it was so dark or something I didn't know what the f I was doing. Think I got killed and was like this is stupid and uninstalled. Might be willing to try again, perhaps I should study the game a little more lol I remember TinyTomLogan(OC3D.net) using a certain 2033 level in some of his benchmarks for GPUs/CPUs back in the day. Looked fun enough.
Resident Evil (is this a FPS?) 1 and Revelations 2
Star Wars Dark Forces 1 and 2 (this is not a joke, never played these, always meant to, but will they itch the FPS bug? You tell me?)
    Star Wars Republic Commando
Tomb Raider (from what it looks like, this is more an adventure, alone, not really FPS, certainly not war-zone type)

    Thanks folks!

And then I type up a thing where I talk about Bioshock among others haha

Shame the CoD:MW campaign was great... but short. Is it worth... $40? >_<
IMO, COD: MW is worth the money. More so if you want to play a little multiplayer. But it was the first COD that I played in years I thought "I will have to run through that again at some point". Really happy with it considering I have not thought much of the last few campaigns I played.

Curious what you don't like about Fallout 3 / NV? Depending on what it was, I would maybe suggest Outer Worlds (free with xbox game pass). Definitely not the theme, but pretty good story / shooting. But depending on what you dislike about Fallout, may not be ideal for you.

Not an FPS, but Metal Gear Solid 5 (The Phantom Pain) is fantastic. To me, story is just OK, but if you like stealth gameplay at all, it is really good.

Definitely would check out Halo. 1,2,3 and reach are all on PC now with 4 and 5 still to come (and I believe ODST as well). Fantastic games.

The newer Wolfenstein (other than Young Blood) games have good shooting. I will admit, I have not finished them but I know a lot of people love them and I am honestly not sure what made me stop playing (Wolfenstein : New Order / Old Blood / 2).

If you go the Halo route or Outer Worlds, would strongly suggest checking out XBox Game Pass. Lot of value and great if you are not sure what exactly you are looking for.

So I veered off from your original ask some, but those are some thoughts. Hope that helps.

That's a question no one can answer but you.

The Infinity Ward games are flashier and more impressive in terms of things they try, but Treyarch handles characters better. That said, if you're looking at older CoD games, skip the Black Ops games unless you want to play all of them(except 4. Skip it anyway. It doesn't have a campaign.) Same for the first 3 Modern Warfare games. MW19 can stand alone, but there are some references you don't get without playing the other games. (Infinity Ward and Treyarch are different developers. They trade off development of the CoD games. Except Modern Warfare 3 and Infinite Warfare have a third different developer as well in Sledgehammer Games.)

For a straight campaign FPS it's hard. Everyone has to put RPG shit in their games now.

You said you played Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. If you haven't played the regular Far Cry 3, I think it's still the best Far Cry game. It's a little weak on the "War" part though.

The Metro games are a bit hard into the RPG stuff. You probably won't enjoy them if you didn't enjoy Fallout. Those and Outer Worlds(which is also very much like Fallout) were my first idea.

The new Tomb Raider games play a lot like Far Cry, but without the open world stuff. I'd say these are the best fit for what you're looking for, but they're third person. I don't know how flexible you are on the first person part, or, once again, the war part.

Also, if you're not too hard into the first person part, and your definition of a "war" game is progressing through a staged area shooting waves of bad guys, I'd also say look at Resident Evil 4 and 5. They're third person, but they're still pretty good. You need a controller for RE4 though. I'm not going to put the evil of that game's KB/M controls on anyone.

Halo is probably the actual best choice for what you describe. It, like CoD and Battlefield, was designed before every game required RPG elements in their campaign.

Mass Effect 2 is probably the best Mass Effect game as far as just being a shooter. Yes, there are levels and talents, but it's downplayed compared to the other games. The only things that mess with you on skipping ME1 is missing out on some old save bonuses, and story choices might not be what you'd have picked, but I really don't think Mass Effect 1 is going to scratch anyone's itch to play a shooter. If missing stuff really bothers you and you don't care about/already know the story, just download a save with all the choices you want.

I read the thread title and then your list and I immediately thought "you should really play through the Halo series". MCC is a great deal on Steam and I'd absolutely recommend it; there are a few bugs in the port, but the gameplay holds up. $50AUD for what must be 50+ hours of campaign gameplay is huge value. Only thing I'd say is that I recommend playing Halo 1 using the old graphics because there are some weird design choices in 343 Guilty Spark in new graphics (the elevator just isn't the same).

If you are particularly bold, you could use a Shiny Ditto. Do keep in mind though, this will infuriate your opponents due to Ditto's beauty. Please do not use Shiny Ditto. You have been warned.

Ive found some of the call of duty campaigns fun. They're pretty much like being in an action movie. And they have some colorful characters in the series.

Halo is another good shout, great story and if you want one with more of a character focus theres not much more out there with more character building than the master chief himself.

I cannot recommend this more. Similar to you, I knew very little going into it, just that it was something a friend told me I needed to check out. If OP is looking for a Good FPS, strong story, war, realistic...I don't think there is a single game out there that fits that description better than Spec Ops: The Line.

Also, to continue what Zogarth was saying, if you choose to play Spec Ops, please do no reading about the game. Just buy, install, and play.

I got all the way to the near-ending of P4G on PC back in late June/early July and I just stopped. (Watched the anime and that was it lol) Never beat the last two bosses in DOOM (2016), mostly due to it being kinda tough and I was like, eh, I saw most of the game. DOOM Eternal is very involved and probably a little beyond my skill level, without going down to the baby difficulty setting lol.

I think I am looking for a campaign FPS with an emphasis on character development, to some degree at least. Last year I discovered the youtube channel Viva La Dirt League and they've done some neat videos about FPS games, talking about character stories and what not throughout. Maybe this is why the sudden urge!

Anyways, I tried Googling some games earlier, but also just wanted to share my request with actual humans, as you all might give more honest and thoughtful replies than Google/a list from some IGN-type website.

Thanks for any and all responses!

Can't speak to this as I haven't played either of them really but I always hear people rave about the Wolfenstein reboot. I have heard people call those 2 games amazing FPS stories.

I would also suggest some of the CoD stories. People like to shit on that series but the stories are typically pretty damn good. At least in my opinion.

I don't know about being realistic, but both the Dishonored games and their expansions are SUPERIOR fps games. Although not as much shooting.

Well if you're gonna mention Dishonored,I'm gonna mention Thief (NOT the reboot),especially the first two. You won't get much better as far as immersion goes, though just like Dishonored I dunno if I'd call them FPS games proper

Honestly, I'm not too worried if a game is old. If it functions well and plays well, I think that's what matters most! Some old games still play very well, some are showing their age.

Graphics are cool, but not totally necessary... though I'll admit sometimes I really do just want to stress my GTX 1080 Ti... it's a hybrid so temps are never an issue... I need to actually use it. lol

I love playing Football Manager. Or rather, I love buying and selling players, nurturing their loan deals, playing time, training, and then eventually either using them in my main team, or selling them off for a premium.

Of course, this isn't really the main focus of FM, so I ask - are there any games where I could do something similar?

Wolfenstein: The New Order is very good. Some people said Titanfall 2 and I would say there's a section of that game that is one of the most fun FPS experiences I've ever had. That being said the campaign is relatively short. The story is pretty throwaway but does have some cool moments. DOOM 2016 is pretty fun as well.
