Terraria - Journey's End Update

If you have ever been interested in playing what some call 2D Side Scroll Minecraft, now is the best time! Terraria has released their final update. I have revisited the game and have been having a great time.

Farthest Frontier

Settlement building sim. In my opinion some of these sims can get a bit heavy in the micro management complexity realm. Farthest Frontier is a great blend of casual simplicity, and depth. The music is exceptionally relaxing, and the atmospheric animations are down right soothing. Though it is easy to let things slip causing a decline in your settlement, it always feels encouraging to try new things until you get it right.

There is a combat side to the game, but not multiplayer. There are random Bandit raids, as well as an Army who will request payment else they may attack and destroy your civilization. All of these can be countered if you play smart, and are able to amass guards and eventually your own army.

If I were to summarize the game in short, I would say: This game is what happens after you win Oregon Trail.

Trying to find a new game (ideally an MMO) to sink my teeth into. I've been playing FF14, however, I'm feeling like it's not the game for me. I enjoy myself well enough when I'm running dungeons, alliance raids, trials, messing around in the Golden Saucer, leveling my gathering and crafting or other classes, POTD...But I really don't like being forced to do the MSQ to progress and unlock content. I'm at the end of Stormblood and I can't take anymore. I've been forcing myself to play through it and I'm burnt out, story just hasn't clicked with me, even Heavensward. Also, I want to do raids and other group content with people, but it feels like guilds are only running Shadowbringers and Endwalker raids/trials/whatever, at least the ones I found. Conflicted about skipping the story because everyone says Shadowbringers is excellent, and I feel like I'd ruin the overall experience if I do skip...

For now, I'm taking a break from it, don't know if I'll give it another chance. In general, not a fan of story-driven games, but I love games that prioritize gameplay over story. Roguelites, racing games, tycoon games, etc. I love games that are good for muting and letting me play my own music or listen to some other bullshit in the background. Character creation and multiplayer a big plus.

If you're considering other MMOs, maybe think about GW2. It is much more gameplay focused than FF14. You can theoretically ignore or downplay the story, since you can go to maps out of order and you only need to do the first 15 minutes of a map storyline to unlock access to that map. GW2 will cost you about $300, though.

For non MMO games, I'd recommend Mount & Blade Warband. Sandbox RPG/RTS where you form a warband, fight who you want, pledge allegiance to lords, climb up the ranks of a kingdom, revolt and start your own kingdom, and eventually take over the world. I've dumped hundreds of hours into mount & blade. M&B is also pretty easy to mod; you just drag and drop a mod file into the mod folder and then select that mod from the game's launcher and you're done. For mods I would recommend playing with Diplomacy as it adds a few cut features back into the game. If you want a change of setting that isn't feudal Europe then I would recommend Gekokujo II, which is set in Japan. There is also Prophecy of Pendor, which is Feudal Europe but the map is smaller than vanilla so the endgame where your steamroll over the world doesn't become tedious like in vanilla, and there is a bit more danger.

Game Suggestion: Chained Echoes

Do you have a special place in your heart to the days of Squaresoft in the 90's? Love the retro 16 bit pixel art, animations, and top quality musical scores? Then you will fall head over heels for Chained Echoes. It is a classic 16bit turnbased JRPG that scratches those aging itches. As best summed up, it is a heartfelt love letter to the days of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. It has everything you loved from those games, as well as a modern feel. I have personally put over 90 hours into the game, and I am left wanting more!

Was just putting out another MMO I know is on console. I'm aware the OP said WoW-esque but they also said they tried Destiny which isn't even close to WoW, so was giving other options.

The two "best" options would probably be Final Fantasy 14 and Elder Scrolls Online.

FFXIV's content is probably the closest to WoW in terms of gameplay (dungeons, raids, PvP battlegrounds) but is much more story focused and linear. You have to complete all expansions in order (including all post launch patches for each) before moving on to the next which may be a turn off for some as the journey to max level is not nearly as fast as WoW (it took me like a month and a half before I got to max level, and that was before the current expansion). It has a free trial which includes the entire base game and first expansion, which can be a multi-hundred hour endeavor depending on how much of a completionist you want to be.

ESO has 1st or 3rd person action combat in the same vein as Skyrim, but is much more open ended with zone level scaling like modern WoW. The game has dungeons, raids, and an entire zone dedicated to PvP, but I can't speak for them as I never actually got around to doing them. The game is currently buy to play, with an optional sub fee to access the newest content and for a few bits of extra content.

FFXIV is the closest to WoW overall and would probably be your best bet. It's got all that plus some other fun stuff like housing etc. Systems-wise, it's WoW.

ESO - Fairly decent mash-up of TES and traditional MMO, with lots of story and a...unpopular sorta action combat system. No clue how PvP or high-end is, but it's a very enjoyable "chill" MMO for exploring zones, doing open world dungeons (sorta, but they feel like it at least!), and blasting some dungeons.

It's a bit further out there overall, but I'll also throw a shoutout for

DCUO - Haven't played in ages, but it checks all those boxes. Superhero MMO so might not be your cup-o-tea, but honestly if I found the gear grind enjoyable I'd probably have stuck around longer. It's fun.

FFXIV is the only console game that plays somewhat like WoW. However, you won't get the classic MMO experience, nor will you get WoW's raid experience or PvP. It is a 400+ hour long visual novel with 200 hours of cutscenes and talking to NPCs. When you aren't reading a dialogue box, you're running to the next NPC to talk to, or occasionally running out into the field to click on a few things or burst down a couple trash mobs. Or you are doing a solo instance. Rarely will you get to queue up for a dungeon or a trial boss fight, but the battle is trivially easy and you will never see the people you got matched up with ever again. If you make it through the entire story to endgame, there is little in the way of real raid content. Like WoW, only the latest raid tier is relevant (and maybe the latest trial boss), but a raid tier in FF14 is only 4 bosses. A raid tier comes out once every other patch, and patches now come out once every 4.5 months. If you include the latest trial boss then you will be farming the same 5 bosses for 9 months at a time. Raids in FFXIV also are not huge levels with lots of rooms and trash and puzzles and mini fights and lore like in WoW; you just queue and teleport onto the platform with the boss. There are 24 man alliance raids with levels, but you don't get to explore those levels like in WoW. They're just straight corridors with no puzzles or anything else, and they only come in LFR difficulty so you don't get to prog them like in WoW raids.

The actual boss fight design is also unlike WoW. In WoW, you have diverse classes with unique abilities like demonic gateways and druid transformations or rogue mass stealths and so on, but in FFXIV there are no unique abilities. Class design is extremely homogenous. There is also no class customization either. In WoW you have unique boss mechanics like a B-team detaching from the main group during Siegecrafter Blackfuse to hop onto the conveyor belt and destroy the inventions, or the maze with Oregorger, or Blackhand tossing some people up into the rafters, the Spine of Deathwing fight, etc. There are no unique fights like WoW fights in FFXIV (there was Steps of Faith where you try to stop a huge dragon from crossing a bridge, but it was demoted from being a trial you could queue for to be a solo instance you do once and never again). FFXIV boss fights are just a big boss on a platform, the end.

Also, in WoW you as a player have a wide margin for error. Botching a single mechanic is unlikely to wipe the raid. In WoW, a raid boss fight is a war of attrition, trying to keep your cool while managing a steadily declining situation with dwindling cooldowns and resources. A wipe is usually due to the culmination of many mistakes by several different party members. But in FFXIV, if any player botches a mechanic, they will receive an immense amount of damage and might be killed, as well as possibly slapping another player with a debuff should they survive the damage. Furthermore, botching a mechanic gets you slapped with a 1 minute long damage debuff. Because all FFXIV boss fights are Patchwerk-esque DPS races, any DPS loss due to being hit with the debuff or a player dying will mean the group won't deal enough DPS to beat enrage. So if anyone screws up, the group will just choose to wipe and reset immediately rather than try to persevere to the end, and being the cause of a wipe makes people fixate on you, which isn't fun. Wiping over and over again because people make mistakes, trying to get that one perfect attempt where no one botches a mechanic is extremely tedious and one of the reasons why I quit savage raiding in FFXIV. When you finally kill the boss, you don't get that sense of euphoria because of your hard work like in a WoW fight, but because of the law of statistics.

FFXIV has halfbaked, under developed PvP. You get the choice between queuing for a chaotic 72 man 24 vs 24 vs 24 battleground where there is no organization or ranked mode, or queuing for 5v5 matches where you push a crystal into the enemy team's goal. FFXIV has an input delay and many abilities lock you in place, so the fast paced PvP feels very janky. FFXIV's PvP does not have longevity like WoW's PvP. There is also no open world PvP.

So once you finish the 400+ hour long visual novel and are caught up to the latest patch's story, there is very little in the way of challenging combat content to do. Decorating your house is fun but it is right now nearly impossible to acquire a house. There aren't enough plots and many empty plots have been bought up by bots en masse. There is a casino called the Gold Saucer where you can participate in minigames like the Triple Triad card game from FF8 or Chocobo Racing, but they get old after a while. There are jumping puzzles but they have very shallow design and there are only three tilesets, so they get old fast as well.

I have tried various MMOs on console. In my personal opinion, Elder Scrolls Online is the best. It hits all the marks for an RPG player, as well as an MMO player.

I am looking for a good RPG game with the following systems in place
1: When you gain levels, you invest stat points, not auto assigned and not gear being the way a build is made (Most important)
2: Left and Right hands have a fully separate item slot in any two weapon class (I want two [Dagger] slots, not a slot for [Duel Daggers])
3: Well made graphics. I don't need it to be Hyper4K-HD but I don't want inconsistent or glitchy graphics. (Example: Zelda OoC HD has good graphics, even if they are not hyper realistic)
4: a class and sub class system is preferred, but heavily requiring that classes not be gender limited or race limited
5: An at least decent character creator
6: The person recommending it to me has played it themselves, and not just seen it on a random top10 video on Youtube

If anyone knows any games that fit this, I would love it if you told me.
Note: Technically Skyrim fits all of these, but I am not asking for Skyrim cuz I already got a few thousand hours on that without even doing 10% of the game's story :U

Something where I can create my own character, that doesn't have a linear story path and with lots of customization in combat skills, so you can keep finding new powerful items/skills/abilities/talents and other ways to get meaningful upgrades as you progress (not just +1% to damage).
I'm hoping Diablo 4 will scratch some of that itch as Diablo 3 was a lot of fun in this aspect, but it got stale and there was only 1 story direction.
Want something with a bit more sidequests and more diversity in settings (diablo is only dark, no lush forests or other more happy typical medieval fantasy settings (barring ponyland >.>))

Does such a game exist?
