Exactly. People were replying to them and were genuinely interested in them, which is far more than can be said about the random pony pics that are posted every now and then.

Not really, actually. If you paid attention the mods pretty much had a thing about posting a lot of OT images/videos/music. It wasn't even about conversations.

Random pony pics are on-topic for the thread. They are different, therefore, from the off-topic images the mods overlook in small numbers, but infract when posted in chains.

I don't think that's the point. x threads ago, mods came down with the hammer about spamming OT images/videos/music. They didn't care about the conversations.

The one thing that puzzles me the most is why people, especially the moderators, keep bringing up the "post in the right place" argument. That doesn't work because that splits the community.

I enjoyed it, and some pics definitely sparked, albeit small, discussions. The dildo cactus for instance.

Except they're being extremely inconsistent. The long chain of Chen posts a month or so ago comes to mind.
