Probably not, for a couple reasons. First: I was shit when I first played DotA, and I doubt not playing it has helped me get any better. Second: I have to have expectations of you in order to be disappointed.

Would people recommend the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series? I'd mention Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat specifically, but the entire bundle is cheaper anyway.
Total Biscuit had it as his deal of the day and it's not that expensive for 3 games.
