Chrome alloys are extremely resistant to oxidation, but they still oxidize, usually under extreme temps. If you're seeing a rainbow color, it's an aluminum coating, if it's gold, it's chrome with a high nickle content. As long as the surface remains uncracked, it'll be fine, but once it starts cracking, the carbon steel underneath will rust and the coating will let go.
