    Japan probably shouldn't have attacked Pearl Harbor either. I mean, sure they dealt a severe blow to the American pacific navy, but they also forced the US to actually get involved with the war.

    The reasoning behind Pearl Harbor was actually pretty sound from a Japanese point of view. They knew they couldn't defeat The US in all out war so they tried to knock them down before it came to that. Luckily for you guys it didn't work as well as they'd hoped.

    that should not have been as funny as it was but it was very very funny touche to you.

    The story behind that is actually tragically hilarious.

    It boiled down to the US being the only major power not really involved in the war, and Japan being the only Axis member easily able to strike them.

    Now, everyone in the Axis pretty much knew it was dumb to bring a fresh and furious US into the war, but the Japanese felt that their honor would be tarnished if they didn't take the opportunity to cripple the US Navy.

    The people in charge did, anyway. Or rather, they thought their subordinates thought that way. Turns out, after the war, they actually discussed it, and even most common citizens thought the attack was ill-conceived, unnecessary, and could have been avoided without loss of honor.

    In other words, Japan poked America because the people in charge didn't want to appear cowardly, something that wasn't a problem in the first place. So in the end, they just looked goddamn dumb.

    I should have phrased that clearer. The US's tactic of island-hopping to subvert Japanese defenses was, at that time, proving to be enough of a problem for the Japanese army and Navy to be quite busy enough without poking Russia with the biggest stick they could find.

    I have a particular fascination with WWII because my great uncle was in Patton's 3rd Army. Drove a tank destroyer or something or other. My grandparents still have a lot of his "loot" from the war.

    Ivory salt and pepper shakers with gold swastikas on them.
    A fuzzy German pilot's hat
    A Nazi armband
    A leather belt complete with iron eagle belt buckle
    A German sniper rifle(later ruined by a family member, that asshole)
    A German youth rifle(I learned how to shoot on it )

    My great uncle said that soldiers getting spoils were to send the items to Patton's warehouse in Texas where they could be picked up when they got back from Europe.

    O_o;

    Family is a bunch of pirates, man.

    The general consensus in America at the time was also that they wanted the US to stay out of the war, as they didn't feel it was their problem. I wrote a large assignment on it back when I was at school, and with high likelihood the US government knew of the attack on Pearl Harbor, or at least that an attack was very likely, but they chose not to act against it, in order to get the public to support going to war.
