Now assuming he is a 2/2 he is still amazing. On turn 5 your Geralf's Messenger has a chance to deal 7 - 12 damage with Jarad alone, making G/B zombies like R/B vampires back during Zen/SoM standard.

Niv-Mizzet in Izzet vs. Golgari is the original Niv, but he is getting a new card in RTR. It is always a good idea to have at least one Niv in your collection, especially this one since it will be $10+.

The cost is pretty typical of sacrifice mechanics of that sort. Most are either 1 and tap or 2 mana. If anything, from what I've found, it's more restrictive because it's two mana of specific type, rather than one and a colorless.

You would believe so, but with Shocklands, most likely, coming out with RTR it will be pretty simple to achieve mana like this, plus we have Arbor Elf that will be able to be used as a Llanowar Elves that can make more than one more type of mana with the shocklands. Of course we still have Cavern of Souls which will be able to get him out just as easily and make sure he get's down. 2 mana of GB is definitely easy to get by turn 5, which is the earliest you can expect to use that ability.
