Let's take the n-word as an example. By using it as an insult, you are saying, "because you are black, you are inherently a bad thing". The c-word: "because you are a woman, you are fit to be used as an insult". Stuff like that. People can't help being who they are. Don't use those words which turn genetic characteristics into tools of hurt. Even if you're not directing it at the person, you're still saying that this attribute which makes them who they are is disgusting.
When you use those words, you're insulting the essence of people.
People can't help being who they are though, and by using it as an insult you're saying they are worthless or disgusting, even if you don't direct it at them. This is different.
