I mean, time traveling, lazer guns, inter-galactic space travel, communication devices between species. We don't have such things. But for a Sci Fi universe to work, they must have these things, or else they must chose a different setting. As I said, nothing states that sci fi needs to be in the future. Which is why, I think, many sci fi novels are focused around time traveling.
And what you are describing about the monsters are exactly what I dislike. Making them scary to us, how does that make sense? Did the aliens, who have their own culture and world, their own understanding of life, know that they would meet us sometime and evolve into something that would put the fear factor on their side? No, I refuse to believe so.
Maybe I am not cut out for Sci Fi. But I think my reasons for disliking it is legit enough. When I look at my favorite movies, not one single sci fi movie is up there besides the first Alien movie, and that is mostly there due to nostalgia and my love for the Alien creature, as I said to Hudson.
