Consider games like The Sims. A virtual world created by you. Even today, the engine of the sims games are pretty huge, and you can almost create some sort of primitive AI through the game.
Many scientists, along with computer enthusiasts, think that in only about 7-10 years we will have computers that will be 500 times faster than the human brain. The human brain runs at (I think) one hundred billion actions per second. We already have computers today that operate at that level of speed. So technically, we already have computers that can work as fast as our brain.
When AI becomes real, which I have no doubt that it will within the next couple of years, then I think the world will be divided. We will be able to make a game that is one huge simulation of the 'real life'. Think about Minecraft, the world rendered in that game is 8 times larger than our earth. This is the quantities we are dealing with.
But this raises a question. If we actually succeed in creating a simulation with working AI, a simulation of a world of our chosing like The Sims, then it would not be ludacris to ask questions about our current world. When people say they've seen werewolfs, ghosts, aliens? When earthquakes and tornado's occur out of thin air. The mystery behind our missing link, what is beyond our universe. These can all be explained by technological difficulties, data codes gone wrong, maybe even third party interference.
Though, I do not think that it is, because if this was true then I would be playing some kind of role, and I do not think the "creators" would like to watch me spread the word. But then again, I might be wrong. It won't change much. Just a fun thing to think about.
