To sum up the original series... The apocalypse is going to happen. While you're putting up a valiant effort to stop it, nothing actually can. The truth is, you're being used to actually speed up the apocalypse because your dad thinks he can manipulate his way into becoming God. But being the foolish mortal that he is, God rejects him entirely. While everyone else becomes spirit goo, Shinji is approached by God in the form of his mother. He is given two choices. Either the world remains the same, people are restored to life like none of this ever happened, but you get to remain the loser that you are. Or you can let the spirits move on and end the world as you know it being left alone with a female to repopulate, I guess, but that won't work because all the souls will leave or something. Keep in mind, I still like the original overall. It was the most emotional anime I had ever watched and allowed me to believe that even a show about giant robots could still have some serious psychology to it.
