There is one very simple and obvious solution to this problem. Han has Luke's lightsaber. All he needs to do is basically stick it in the ground and maybe swirl it around a bit and he can create a pool of boiling water and very hot soil from the snow, ice, and soil. We know this could occur because when Qui-Gon Jinn plunged his lightsaber into the blast doors of the Trade Federation Bridge and held it there, it was melting the door. A lightsaber does generate heat, but it has a thermal dampener (a piece of technology with nothing like it in reality which can confine the transference of heat similar to how a magnetic field contains plasma) which confine that heat to a region that barely passes beyond the edge of the actual blade of the saber. None the less, if anything is actually held in contact with the blade, it will be exposed to the edge of that extreme heat field and heat up quickly. Creating and maintaining a pool of boiling water could easily have allowed them to remain warm enough to survive while using the tauntaun as a windbreaker.
