Buy a new rig or update current one. I'm a little lost, please help!

So guys,

With the new expansion coming up, I'm thinking of upgrading my rig. I'm stuck between buying a new one or upgrading some components of my pc.

I'm thinking about the following in this order:

1. Graphic card
2. CPU

And of course, Power supply if the new components require it.

I've checked several forums and websites, but I'm still wondering: how much of my current rig can I upgrade untill it's better to buy a new one?

I've called HP customer service for advice (this was long ago, when I sent my pc there because the graphic card was broken). So, before it was ATI Radeon HD 4650, after they returned it, they put a ATI Radeon HD 4670 in it. So that's the one I have now.

The guy that I talked to on the phone said I could go up to as high as:

• GPU: GT 440 or radeon 6000 (yet there are so many of them)

• CPU: DualCore Q6600

He also advised to buy a new power supply (500 or 550 Watt).

Is this about right? Do you also feel that this is the best I can get for my pc?

I looked around and stumbled upon these:

• Nvidia GTX 560 Ti, 470, 480, favoring towards the 570.

• AMD HD 6950 or 7850.

I guess in order to make these work (if my pc can handle them), I'll need a new and stronger power supply.

Now, I think the AMD Radeon HD 4870 (or the x2 version) is a great low cost upgrade for my pc, but I can't find a shop selling it anywhere online. Is it not supported by Dx11? Or did I read that wrong?

WoW settings: I have my graphics at the predetermined "Good" option. FPS in SW is 20ish.

My budget is 600-900 euros. There's no need from me to run everything at ultra or even high in WoW.
What I would like is a higher FPS and everything at least at "Good" and maybe even "High" with a couple of options disabled if necessary to keep the FPS higher than 40.
My current resolution is 1400x1050, I like this resolution as the others stretch the visuals too much (longer characters and such).
And I'm from the Netherlands.

With 900€ budget I'd ditch whole thing and buy totally new computer.

You can upgrade, but you're looking at spending 200-300€ for a 30% improvement vs spending 700-900€ for 100% improvement in WoW and 200-300% higher FPS in other games.

When it comes to graphics cards, GTX500 series as well as Radeon 6000 series are old news, even considering those is just replacing old stuff with slightly less old stuff. Also GTX570 is way overboard with resolution as small as 1440x1050. No clue btw. How you ended up with that size, is it perhaps old-fashioned CRT monitor? You might want to consider going for 1920x1080 LCD instead.

I bought the monitor seperately. It's a 19" LCD monitor. the biggest resolution I can get is 1650x1050, but when I do this in WoW it stretches the characters (makes them look longer, weird).

I agree with vesse here, its not worth upgrading, and with that budget you can get a damn fine machine that'll run any game beautifully.

I bought the monitor seperately. It's a 19" LCD monitor. the biggest resolution I can get is 1650x1050, but when I do this in WoW it stretches the characters (makes them look longer, weird).

You should be able to play on 1680x1050 monitor at it's native resolution without any distortions. Make sure both the windows desktop as well as game is set to 1680x1050, not just the game.

I know I'm replacing old stuff with slightly less old stuff, but I thought maybe I could at least get MoP working without having performance issues.

For example that Radeon 7850 you mentioned is at the moment good choice in the midrange cards when building new. GTX560/570 are not totally bad, but they are already gimped by having only 1GB videoram.

i5-2500k/i5-3570k + z77 motherboard + 8GB of RAM is currently the best reasonable gaming setup you can get, that bunch will be about 400€ and on top comes graphics card and new PSU. Your current 300W might be able to run new stuff as the i5-3570 is quite low power processor compared to five year old stuff, but it's still a roll of the dice with it. With that kind of setup and R7850 (for example) you should be able to run all games at high settings on your 1680x1050 monitor, and most of them at ultra, while still being well under your 900€ maximum.

I see your point in just buying a whole new rig. I guess it's time to buy a new one anyway (this one's from 2008 iirc). I will look for premade rigs which I can hopefully modify with the suggestions you made and link it here, so you can look into it hopefully.
