5 vowels, yes. As far as the actual sounds typically go there are about 105, plus some extra they need to mash together for foreign words. The sound "che" does not exist in actual Japanese for instance, but they use the word "check-in" for check-ins at the airport and such.

And it's more than just stresses though. I can still go through the whole alphabet if you'd really like, but it'd take a fairly large post.

You have 7 base consonants. Two that are asperated, one that is truncated. Then you have stressed and unstressed. The 5 vowel sounds are combined in various ways to create a variety of sounds, but they are all based on the 5 sounds. There are no hard or soft vowels.

This is all based on what I learned from an exchange student 10 years ago, though, so some of it may be fuzzy.
