That's kind of a dumb thing to lie about. I mean, there are people out there who will lie about anything, but I don't think the average person has anything to gain about pretending this, so it seems kinda weird to be suspicious of such claims. And millions of players played in vanilla so it's not like an outrageous claim.

LOL This. So much. Vanilla player here and definately think SO many players see it with Rose-tinted glasses, and a hell of a lot more pretend they were playing vanilla when they weren't, just so they can moan more.

Actually, you could probably do a "How to know if someone didn't REALLY play Vanilla" thread. I hear a lot of stupid stuff about how great things were and how blizzard have ruined things. There's a lot of myths about Vanilla and what was aweome in it which, if you had actually played, were in reality painstaking chores.

A lot was fun in Vanilla, and it's true a lot has been dumbed down massively, BUT a lot was a VERY tedious grind and it did take bloody ages to walk anywhere or quest, let alone getting a group together.

You do realise that a great proportion of Vanilla players couldn't afford Epic mount/Riding at the time? It was a crazy amount and definately one of the money-sinks of its day.

Learning new ranks of abilities from dungeon/raid books.
Taming Broken Tooth (hunter pet speeds were not normalized)
Meeting someone in the world and acknowledging their presence.
Blink was a valuable method of transportation.
    Mages were primarily vending machines.
Kiting world bosses to main cities.
MC PVP Quartermasters in Alterac to 2-shot nearby folks of the opposite faction.
Going to TB periodically to get the quests for the croc, yeti, and wind serpent.
Being firmly opposed to the addition of paladins to the horde.
Your friends not understanding how you could devote so much time to a video game.
When children playing the game had respect and shame, trying to hide their actual age.

    Enough for now. :]

I know almost all of these, and I started playing at the end of TBC. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not all of these are strictly Vanilla, either. Hunter ammo / Warlock soulshards were removed with Cata launch. You can still get Benediction today. etc. etc.

Here here Matthias, classic WoW was a super pain in the ass, most of the time. But I think it truly did hone the talent of people that tried to do serious things together, as you had to endure all that pain and time to get this or that to improve yourself. I agree that the tedium is a thing best left to our distant memories; I don't think the current game has that similar "crucible of devotion" that allowed people to have the skills, desire and patience to truly tackle the new and challenging content. That’s the thing I miss the most quite frankly.

But carry on; perhaps the old dogs should die out to make room for the new ones anyway.

If you remember needing to cast "Detect Magic" to see what buffs a mob had

i like calling it classic, since thats what it is !

You definitely played it if you experienced the following:

    Farming UBRS Key
Feeling proud of finnishing scholomance with 5 people in like 4 hours.
Starting over as a Priest because noone wanted to heal, ever.
    Drakedog
    World of Roguecraft
40 Man Wiping on Lava packs
Praying for Kazzak to appear for the eye
    Mindcontrolling Razorgore
    Death Metal Vaelastrasz
Someone ninjalooting the third bosses head by accident
Laughing at how easy the 3 drakes were
Using Timesand or what it was called to unfreeze people on Chromaggus
Everyone needing to have an onyxia scale cloak
Cursing shamans for making Nef P1 so easy
Cursing we didnt have a thunderfury
Killing nefarian with 2 people alive
    Waiting 4 months for Lok'amir
Owning literally everyone as a shadowpriest in pvp with pve gear, whole fixed groups feared me.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71sVv__DryA
Farming twilight dudes for epixx just to give up because i underestimated the insanity
Missing the AQ opening event ((((
Breezing through until we reached the twin emps
Poaching our old guild of all good people to create <Addicted>
Being amazed by how awesome an encounter twin emps are
Finally beating them just to be punished by trash again
Being confused about Ouru, could it really be that easy ?
People running through C'thuns laserbeam XD
    Serverfirsting C'thun
Edge of Madness being insanely cool
Farming rep and gold to be able to afford the naxxramas attunement
    Killing Viscidus without shamans !!!!!!!
Farming some mushrooms to be able to kill Loatheb
Europe Firsting Razuvious as a mindcontroller since everyone went spider wing first :P
    PvP'ing to rank 10
German firsting everyone from Loatheb to Sapphiron
Failing a year in school because well, rank 10 and raiding takes ALL the time.
Quitting but still seing your guild beat Kel'Thuzad as a german first

When you went to Blasted Lands to pull the mob that didn't die, just to skill up Weapon skills when you got a new weapon that you didn't already have maxed.

    Edit:
Oh and having a few lvl 20 warlocks placed around Azeroth to check if world bosses were up and to summon the raid.
As well as having a phone list on forum to call guildies when world bosses spawned to get the kill :>

Yep. That's why I wrote 3 options. With 3rd the most credible.

When guys come up to me saying they've been playing since beta, I tell them what Jerry Maguire would say: Show me the account history!

Actually, there were 14 PvP ranks back then. Unless you're trying to say you stopped at Rank 10. Which is fine, btw.

Thank God I had finished University by the time I started plying wow....

Actually there is a way to know if a person was playing in vanilla.
Check his/her armory for the PvP title's date. If it says 10/14/2008, it is/was a serious pvp player.
That was the date when Achievements were introduced in WoW, in the pre-WotLK patch 3.0.

They disabled rank gaining very close to BC, after almost two years after WOW's release.

Anyway, after 1.12 (summer 2006) ranking got piss easy with crossrealm BGs.

As a Priest, I took some epic ass beatings from those bastards. Nothing like playing a class whose defenses were all able to be dispelled. Purge. Purge. Purge. Queue Horde blender.

On topic: You know someone played Vanilla if they remember when it didn't take an entire tree to make Power Word: Shield overpowered.
