How to know if someone played vanilla!

This, I'm kind of wary whenever I see someone claiming they've played since vanilla. Even if they can list off things that were around in vanilla, there's so many of these threads everywhere on the internet it's easy to copy and paste.

That's kind of a dumb thing to lie about. I mean, there are people out there who will lie about anything, but I don't think the average person has anything to gain about pretending this, so it seems kinda weird to be suspicious of such claims. And millions of players played in vanilla so it's not like an outrageous claim.

LOL This. So much. Vanilla player here and definately think SO many players see it with Rose-tinted glasses, and a hell of a lot more pretend they were playing vanilla when they weren't, just so they can moan more.

Actually, you could probably do a "How to know if someone didn't REALLY play Vanilla" thread. I hear a lot of stupid stuff about how great things were and how blizzard have ruined things. There's a lot of myths about Vanilla and what was aweome in it which, if you had actually played, were in reality painstaking chores.

A lot was fun in Vanilla, and it's true a lot has been dumbed down massively, BUT a lot was a VERY tedious grind and it did take bloody ages to walk anywhere or quest, let alone getting a group together.

There is only 2 legit way to prove you have played classic.
- If you have an unarmored epic mount. It was available till 2005 spring. It was 900g, so unless you were an AH shark you couldn't have it. (I have seen only 2 of them, one in classic on my home server and another one in BC in a crossrealm AV.)

You do realise that a great proportion of Vanilla players couldn't afford Epic mount/Riding at the time? It was a crazy amount and definately one of the money-sinks of its day.

Learning new ranks of abilities from dungeon/raid books.
Taming Broken Tooth (hunter pet speeds were not normalized)
Meeting someone in the world and acknowledging their presence.
Blink was a valuable method of transportation.
Mages were primarily vending machines.
Kiting world bosses to main cities.
MC PVP Quartermasters in Alterac to 2-shot nearby folks of the opposite faction.
Going to TB periodically to get the quests for the croc, yeti, and wind serpent.
Being firmly opposed to the addition of paladins to the horde.
Your friends not understanding how you could devote so much time to a video game.
When children playing the game had respect and shame, trying to hide their actual age.

You played vanilla if you killed Kazzak in Blasted Lands.
You played vanilla if you farmed Tyr's hand in EPL.
You played vanilla if you know what benediction is as a Priest.
... if you can name all priest racials.
... if you know about 21/8/22 as a Rogue.

... when warlocks had to farm soulshards before raiding or doing anything really, poor guys. And when a soulshard took a bagslot.
... when hunters needed ammo for their ranged weapons, and the ammo stacked per 200 and took bagslots. And there was different types of ammo's, very strong ammo could be made by engineers.
... when guards gave honor.
... when you got knocked down by the [The Unstoppable Force]
... when Ironforge was the main city where everyone on Alliance hanged out because it was the only city with a Auction House.
... when Innerfire (Priest selfbuff) gave attack power.
... If you knew who Broken Tooth was as a hunter.

I know almost all of these, and I started playing at the end of TBC. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not all of these are strictly Vanilla, either. Hunter ammo / Warlock soulshards were removed with Cata launch. You can still get Benediction today. etc. etc.

Here here Matthias, classic WoW was a super pain in the ass, most of the time. But I think it truly did hone the talent of people that tried to do serious things together, as you had to endure all that pain and time to get this or that to improve yourself. I agree that the tedium is a thing best left to our distant memories; I don't think the current game has that similar "crucible of devotion" that allowed people to have the skills, desire and patience to truly tackle the new and challenging content. That’s the thing I miss the most quite frankly.

But carry on; perhaps the old dogs should die out to make room for the new ones anyway.

Killing nefarian with 2 people alive

Owning literally everyone as a shadowpriest in pvp with pve gear, whole fixed groups feared me.

When you went to Blasted Lands to pull the mob that didn't die, just to skill up Weapon skills when you got a new weapon that you didn't already have maxed.

Oh and having a few lvl 20 warlocks placed around Azeroth to check if world bosses were up and to summon the raid.

Check his/her armory for the PvP title's date. If it says 10/14/2008, it is/was a serious pvp player.
That was the date when Achievements were introduced in WoW, in the pre-WotLK patch 3.0.

They disabled rank gaining very close to BC, after almost two years after WOW's release.

Anyway, after 1.12 (summer 2006) ranking got piss easy with crossrealm BGs.
