the equation is ambiguous and therefore both 1 and 9.

The way you wrote it isn't the greatest.
6/(2(1+2)) = 1
But
(6/2)*(1+2) = 9

pedmas or pemdas says:
parentheses first: 6/2*3
equations: N/A
division and multiplication happen at the same step, from left to right, so 6/2 is 3, 3*3 = 9.

The answer is 9. My college professor says that you have to use multiplication/division and subtraction/addition from Left to Right!
