Expecting a game developer to actually develop and release a game and properly manage their game development is entitlement?

How am I clueless? (That sounds so stupid, lol)

The game was announced in 2011, was originally announced to release in 2014 (which they obviously completely botched) and has received nearly (if not more, hard to tell because of how it's being funded) $200 million for development. That puts it in the top 4-5 most expensive video game development costs of all time.

So again, how is expecting a video game developer that is THAT well funded to actually do their job and properly run their project to get a game out the door entitlement?

What have I said that makes me "clueless?"

Difference between this company and Blizzard.

Blizzard for the most part actually release finished products in a suitable timeframe.

With the exception of the odd game like SC Ghost or that Warcraft text based game. But games always get cancelled. No company has ever not cancelled a game.

Sorry but his ego is so fucking massive and all because he had some minor success back in the 90s. He's like an actor who had one big role and thinks they are still relevant today. The fact he can sit there and say his company is comparable or even bring up Blizzard is laughable at best.

Thanks Edge. Been a bit down because I have a broken leg atm but you cheered me up with that link today. <3
Sorry to hear about your leg, how did you do it?

Did you fall off your high horse again?

It's not alpha when they are still in tool- and system creation phase. That's called pre-alpha. Once they start focusing on proper content creation then we can call it alpha. Right now you have glorified vertical slice.

Proper content creation? There's already over 50 flyable ships in the game, missions with fully voiced and animated quest givers, moons, in October we will have Planets with cities on them, cargo trading, piracy, FPS AI bots with associated missions, planet-side racing, asteroid mining, the list goes on and on. Sounds like proper content creation to me.

Look, people can defend CIG all they want, but there is no denying that they are taking their sweet ass time. Larian has crowdfunded and released two games, both of which have received a Definitive Edition upgrade and were updated and released for consoles. Obsidian has funded and released both Pillars of Eternity games, as well as additional content, and they did Tyranny in that timeframe as well. Meanwhile CIG is still working on core systems, is still in alpha production with beta nowhere in sight. They show content at their CitCon that takes years to be seen in-game, and have, quite possibly, the worst PR in the industry; mainly because the amount of bullshit Chris Roberts throws out there makes Peter Molyneux look like an honest developer. Let's not kid anybody, SC and S42 are still years away; at the rate they are going, I'd be surprised if they hit beta by 2020. There is no doubt in my mind that Cyberpunk 2077 will release well before SC. And as a backer, this frustrates and infuriates me. And the best part, they're only this far along because they got lucky and picked up the CryEngine developers. Can you imagine the state of the game if those engineers were never picked up?

There's more complexity to game development than release dates and funding, and speaking about game development in only those terms is a good sign you're not aware of any other factors. If your equation is funding/time taken = good management or bad management then you have a very simplistic grasp of things and are therefore clueless. You have given no evidence in any of your posts that your grasp of things goes beyond that so what else am I suppose to assume?

You accuse CIG of botching things in 2014 and yet you seem to have no idea that CIG polled the backers to find out whether they wanted a more ambitious game with continued crowdfunding efforts and the community overwheamingly agreed for CIG to work towards a far more ambitious title. Again clueless, but you were quick to to infer that CIG are incompetent when it's you who is simply uninformed. Classic dunning-kruger moment

CIG did not start out with $200 million and it took a little while before the money started flowing in, that's a completely different set of circumstances to a company that has a ironclad budget from day one. The kickstarter only brought in $2.2 million, the game they originally set out to make was nothing compared to what they are building now and the key thing is that they had no future knowledge that a massive windfall would be coming their way in the near future. It wasn't mismangement, the company is simply adopting to changing conditions. Now, if you want to call PR blunders mismangement then I'll agree with that, because their PR is absolutely dire lol.

I wasn't keen on the "fanboi" remarks either, you know the people who are taking the risk to help fund this game into existance, test and provide feedback to help the developers, while others *ahem* sit on the sidelines waiting. Now you're perfectly entitled to make your own choices about when and where and if you wish to jump in and spend your money but at least recognise that others are taking the risk to help bring their dream game into existance and don't deserved to be belittled for their efforts while other play it safe.

Fair point, I apologize for the fanboi comment, but it does seem a bit like that since CIG has not been able to properly manage this beast of a game until recently yet people pour money into without any real confirmation that anything would come out of it. I'll concede that it's a risk the backers are taking and that I should be mindful of that, however I don't think it's a smart risk and seems a bit like zealotry and not calculated and logical to throw money at this project after not getting anything other than shiny tech demos (which are REALLY shiny though...I'll give them that, I have a buddy who's backed it and shown me his ships).

EDIT: Early backers definitely should be commended for taking a risk. It's the backers that gave money during the 2014-present time frame I'm more referring to because from that point it just seems like they were throwing money at it blindly with no real return on investment aside from the tech demos.

I understand that game development is nuanced and I know very little about the nuts and bolts of developing a game. I am however very experienced in project management and this project has been, historically, horribly managed and has suffered from two of the biggest no-nos in project management: scope creep and changing the plan. The release date has bee REPEATEDLY pushed back due to scope creep, which was the exact reason for the 2014 delay. I'm well aware of why it happened, I'm just saying I think it's a terrible excuse and just shows how badly it was being managed in the first place.

I am not discussing game development, per se, I'm talking abut project management and how this project has been incredibly mismanaged. They've recently gotten better, true, but that doesn't change how badly it was managed prior to this.

They could have easily released a base game with set plans to expand on it with all of the stuff they're adding in expansion that they could charge for if they wanted to. They decided to try and make this beast of a game into one giant thing. It's yet to be decided whether that will pan out.

As I said, I'll be impressed if/when this project ever gets completed, I hope it does and they'll get my money if/when that happens. But they've gotten plenty of funding so far and I won't further reward them for a badly managed project.

They just did a 180 and made all of the streams free again. Wow, talk about a serious company. Hahahaha, these idiots just can't get anything right. They could have saved themselves this little adventure altogether or stuck to their guns, now they have the worst of both worlds.

No, this is a good thing, don't shit on them for reversing course on a dumb decision.

Yeah, consumer-wise it's as good as it gets. If it was a publicly traded company though, this would be a fun ride.

But it's not so...it doesn't matter in the slightest and I'm not sure why you even bring it up.

There's plenty to be critical of with CIG/SC, I don't get why we have to manufacture reasons to shit on them.

  14. #6154
The decision Chris made to correct it was the best thing that could've happened.

Reading between the lines here, it seems that CIG needs more money and has only gone deeper than the Warbonds stuff they started before. That along with the fact that it took this much for them to realize that this was bad is pretty concerning.

Call, me old fashioned, but I'm a person that would rather wait a long time for a completed product, than get bugged out shit that was rushed to meet a deadline. If this game takes 10 years, but is great, great; if this game takes 10 years and is shit then I will join the hate train like others.

Imagine this scenario. A guy tries to build a house next to his boat, when he is halfway done, the boat moves and the guy decides to start again.

Imagine this scenario over and over and over again and you get Duke Nukem Forever.

I don't know, there does seem to be progress, albeit slow there is progress. Whether that progress is indicative of the work put in? I don't know. If they do come out with a game that meets their claim, then it will be a day one purchase for me.

Thanks for this. I sort of was following SC about five years ago and have seen it mentioned now and again. The project/game looks interesting but catching up to current times seems to show a lot of bad project management. Frankly it looks like a mess.

Yeah they need money for Citizencon because they aren't able to fund it using the money raised for development. Historically the event has been covered by subscriptions and selling tickets, then last year they were sponsored by Intel and were able to put on a much bigger and better show than previous years. This year they decided they were going to up the ante again but without a sponser(maybe a deal fell through this time around???). The idea of paywalling the keynote was dumb as hell though, even putting the money issue aside I think they shouldn't be trying to make it harder for potential future players to watch the show. Ironically though, after the community rioting, pot stirring by bad actors and bad press the end result will probably be a influx of new people signing up for RSI accounts to watch the show see what all the fuss is about.
