    Building a Desktop

    Budget - 800$
    Resolution - at least 1600 x 900
Games / Settings Desired - WOW MOP 25 man raids at ultra settings
Any other intensive software or special things you do - No
    Country - US
Parts that can be reused - None
Do you need an OS? - No
    Peripherals - I need a monitor

I have been looked at the sample builds sticky and I have no idea which to choose, would appreciate any help I can get.
If my budget is not enough to play MOP on ultra please let me know what I can get for 800$.

    Thank you

Marest's 790 Build should play WoW just fine at Ultra, maybe tone down the shadows and AA in 25 mans and capital cities:

    MoBo: ASRock Z77 Pro3 – $94.99
    CPU: Intel i5 3570k – $229.99
    RAM: G.Skill 1600MHz 2x4GB – $33.99
    GPU: MSI GTX 660 – $229.99
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB – $69.99
    PSU: XFX ProSeries 450W – $62.99
Case: Antec Three Hundred – $69.99
    --------------------------------------------------
    Estimated Total Price – $792

    MoBo: ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP – $79.99
    CPU: Intel i5 3350P – $189.99
    RAM: G.Skill 1600MHz 2x4GB – $33.99
    GPU: Sapphire Radeon 7850 – $189.99
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB – $69.99
    PSU: XFX ProSeries 450W – $62.99 Review
    Case: Rosewill Challenger – $49.99

Would you happen to know the max settings the 680 build can handle on WoW?
I still need a monitor and so I cannot afford to spend all $800 before including the monitor.

I doubt very much that that build would hit a consistent 60FPS at anything above High in WoW (at 1080p), definitely not if you are in SW/Org or a 25-man raid.

But, if you're ok playing at a lower resolution, it should be okay on Ultra without shadows and AA.

Would all monitors work with the 790 build or is there a size requirement for 1600x900?

  6. #6
1600x900 is a pretty low resolution, any modern monitor would be able to play at that. But if you were to go with the 790 build, I'd really recommend a nice 21, 22 or 23" monitor capable of playing at 1920x1080 (aka 1080p) at least.

You can pick up a decent monitor capable of this for around $100 on sale.

    Monitor: ViewSonic VA2212M-LED Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LED Monitor 250 cd/m2 DC 10,000,000:1 (1000:1) Built-in Speakers - 130$
    MoBo: ASRock Z77 Pro3 – $94.99
    CPU: Intel i5 3570k – $229.99
    RAM: G.Skill 1600MHz 2x4GB – $33.99
    GPU: MSI GTX 660 – $229.99
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB – $69.99
    PSU: XFX ProSeries 450W – $62.99
Case: Antec Three Hundred – $69.99

    Total $921.92

This is what I have so far, please let me know if I should change something.

Thanks for the build Dysko, do you happen to know what the performance of that build would be for WOW?

High settings for open-world/5mans/low pop PVP, medium settings on raids

Although I'd change the SSD to a 128GB Crucial M4, and change the PSU to a 430w

    I'd take CadeE's build, it's better.

I noticed my build is missing a cooler, do I not need one?

The stock cooler works fine, but you can get a Hyper212+ for ~$25

You should see a solid 60fps in raids with high settings and not to much aa/ssao turned up.
the cpu comes with a stock cooler that works fine, you dont need an aftermarket because you can overclock that cpu.

i dont understand why you would want a smaller ssd? unless the only game you are going to play is wow and thats it. he could go 430w, but for the price that psu is great and gives him more wattage.

her is an alternative build with an i5 and a 128gb ssd. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kwlN

his second build is better, but its $100 over what he said. it also has a mechanical drive and i5. he could downgrade the ssd to a mechanical and take taht savings towards a i5. like this.. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kwj0

personally i dont like the hyper 212. 90% of the time the fan thats meant to blow out the back of the case hits the memory and you have to put the fan on the other side. this means it is sucking the air instead of pulling.

I've never encountered the Hyper212 blocking a high profile RAM stick, used it both on a Z77, P67 & H67 board

Okay I mixed a bunch of the builds together and this is what I have.
    Think I should change anything?

it looks good. i would highly suggest going with a 256gb ssd if possible, but that means paying about an extra $100. that could be an upgrade come tax time.. haha..
    why the antec case?
Also, just realized that the hard drive you selected is a refurbished one. on a side note if you have a microcenter close to you, they run some pretty good deals on cpu+motherboard combos and price match internet prices. something to think about.

Should I go for a cheaper case? I am not really sure what would be compatible with everything else.

In the 'default' position, the fan blocks the 4th ram's heat sink. The Hyper 212 Evo's fan is clip on so you can just move it up though.

256GB SSD is a waste of money on a $900 build, the money could go somewhere better.

Change the PSU to this , the HEC PSU is bad, very bad. I wouldn't even plug a fan on it.

I dont see how an ssd is a waste of money? My 2 256gb ssd's is probably the best investment ive made into my computer. if he had the extra $100 to make the $900 the only other reasonable upgrade would be a 660ti, im not sure if that could be justified over dropping a mechanical drive.

the hec might be a bad move, but i cant say anything as i havent had any experience with them. they had a 4/5 on the egg.

im digging this build as it meats his $800 budget. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kAjs
