[Ret] Fix my DPS!

Hi everyone. i have been reading this thread for a while now & i came to realize i'm in great need of help with my paladin.
Currently i'm pulling sad numbers & most of the times last on the damage meters something i'm not really used to.

I posted earlier but have not gotten feedback as of yet. I believe my gems/enchants/reforges are about spot on. The issue is where am i going wrong? I am wracking my head trying to figure it out, given I am not getting trixed or anything I think i am doing things right, but it FEELS like I am not. Any input/suggestions would be appreciated, I hate performing lower than I should, and I think I should be doing better, hence why I am here hoping some other rets might see something I am just missing.

I am just using needtoknow to track trinket icds.

Your gear is perfectly fine, its like 99.9% of the way to perfect, definitely a play issue if your dps is low. Try posting logs if you want us to look at what you're doing.

It hardly makes a difference, yeah pure str gems arent ideal but its only going to change overall dps by a fraction of a %

only use Selfless healer when you have 3 stacks and are low on health

Use selfless healer for awesome heals to save raid members. Being ret isnt about personal dps performance, if you don't bring utility you might as well not be there

Hand of Purity is completely useless on almost every fight and actually IS a dps loss because purity takes a GCD.

if you want to max your dps you should drop JC (the weakest profession) and pick up Engineering ASAP!

- line up Synapse Springs with every Execution Sentence (both have a 1min cd) and just laugh at the dmg it does!

You will get more of a dps increase by playing a little bit better than you could possibly get by changing professions (which is a laughably small increase). I hate when people give recommendations like this, people are going around thinking they're going to see a big dps increase when they get 2 more ilvls or some more haste, or switch professions, when it just isn't the case. I love engineering and definitely recommend it to anyone pushing heroic progression, but it's the last step I'd take if I was already doing outstanding dps.

Double Jeopardy is a must and should be used whenever possible here is a helpful macro

Your info for DJ is useful but if we're talking about someone working on getting good at paladin, double jeopardy is definitely something that comes in later. You dont want to put too much on someone's plate when they're learning a spec. DJ is a dps increase, no doubt, but worrying about DJ could easily mess someone up and they end up doing less dps anyway.

- Glyph of Harsh Words is good for range heavy hights

As far as I know, its almost always better to just wait another second till you can get into range - harsh words' damage is pretty bad. I could be wrong about that, havent looked into it much

9. i did not go over her rotation from WoL, if you think there is something off there then just look around on this forum and you should be able to find some good rotations

Its not about not knowing the rotation, its about knowing what you're doing wrong. Anyone can google 'ret rotation' but its hard sometimes to figure out why dps might be low. I don't mean to be a total dilweed about half of the stuff you said, but it frustrates me when this thread becomes about gear. Even if you're completely reforged wrong you can still do "enough" dps just by playing correctly. If you are struggling to play correctly, no amount of gear or glyph changes will fix that.

Is there anyway to measure just how much DPS a trinket gives you over any particular encounter?

It is theoretically mathable but not really worth it - simcraft says spark is good, that's about the best info we have right now. I personally hate spark, but oh well

I don't really understand why you seem to have a personal grudge with paintpuller, but some of what he said is right. Strength sucks for ret, gem haste. You can do whatever you want with your selfless healer procs: it's part of a personal play style. Hand of Purity is the single most useful hand at the moment. I use it on almost every fight. It's awesome. Lightning storm in HJinrok, putting it on people who get blazing sunlight or that shitty bleed on HHorridon, biting cold on HCouncil, tank breaths on HMegarea, eating slime pools on HJikun, the list goes on. You'd be amazed how much the 70% reduction works on, and if it doesn't a 10% shield wall is pretty damn good.

I have nothing against paintpuller, had no idea who he was until I read that post.

Strength doesnt 'suck' for ret, its a miniscule difference between gemming str vs str+haste in a red socket. Yeah you SHOULD gem haste but we're not talking about cutting-edge progression nor close to it.

Of course you can do whatever you want with SH procs, but never using it to save someone kind of defeats the purpose of the talent. Yeah hand of purity is great when you need it but why would you suggest the importance of a utility spell like that while simultaneously saying to ignore the benefit of healing others on selfless healer.. Surviving lightning storm as a melee is so easy I didn't even consider purity there, blazing sunlight ticks for hardly anything, the bleed on horridon ticks for hardly anything, and you don't need to ever eat a pool on heroic Ji-kun. Haven't done H Council or magaera though I have heard that biting cold is intense. If the 70% reduction doesnt work, the 10% *would* be okay... except it takes a GCD so its actually garbage. I havent done the math and could be wrong, but I'm pretty confident that Unbreakable spirit is going to do more meaningful damage mitigation than purity on almost every fight (especially if its spiky magic damage) and not cost you any dps.

- Ret's ability to save someone from spike damage with SH has nothing to do with healers being bad, and in either case, if your healers are good then you don't need Hand of Purity either.
- No, it isnt, its exactly as good as I know because I know exactly what it does
- You can do "enough" dps for the level of progression you're on. If you want to push out that last 2% I absolutely respect that, but it takes practice and personal skill, you can't just go onto a forum and expect them to fix your gems and all of a sudden you're doing better dps.

-I don't think you know what you're talking about on a lot of these points. The Bleeds/Blazing sunlight on HHorridon do hurt quite a bit(even moreso in progression). Hand of Purity DOES work on the perodic damage component of Biting Cold. Why would you not eat a pool on Ji-Kun? The more pools you eat, the more the damage buff gives you. It's a DPS increase...and if I can't soak them, I'm giving them to our blood DK who IS soaking them. I'd say I choose HoP over either talent for 90% of fights. So what if it takes a GCD. If tanks die, or targets that need a CD that have a DoT on them die, it's probably a wipe.

-Do whatever you want with your SH procs, idgaf.

-Gemming/enchanting/gearing correctly AND understanding why it is correct are the first steps to becoming a better player.

I'm trying to tighten up my beginning CD rotation and just wondering what other ret's are doing.

I swapped to engineering and have the Ji-Kun trinket, so i'm thinking of going Exo -> 1 hp inq -> AW+GOAK -> regular rotation til 10 stacks of mighty -> activate synapse and ES -> regular rotation. This seems perfect since Ji-Kun's procs at the beginning and 20 seconds in, you activate synapse and you have 10 seconds of synapse with the leftover AW and GOAK.

My rotation used to be 4pt11 GOAK at pull then swap back, then regular rotation til i have 3 HP, then inq -> AW -> regular rotation til 10 stacks of mighty -> ES -> regular rotation.

I am looking for some more experienced ret players who min max to help me with my rotation.
I feel like I'm under performing compared to other rets on wol.

I was reading that I should prioritize how over es/lh, but I was wondering what others thought.

The Ret Pally in our 10 man guild seems to be doing sub par DPS. Maybe its just my imagination and everything is fine. Maybe she is doing everything right and its a gear thing. Looking at the Tortos kill in the first log.... the Inq up time is awful. It's at 37%. You want 98-99%. That's a huge, huge thing.

Just after a quick glance: Under expertise cap. Inq uptime way too low like Jaling said. Should be using HoTR+DS over CS+TV on council and multi-dotting censure if the bosses are grouped up (should be outside of ranged spreading when marlii is empowered). On jin'rokh didnt use execution sentence at all and use of cs seems low. Hammer of wrath usage definitely lower than it should be. Not waiting until pools to use cooldowns. Would also recommend using Sanctified Wrath as a level 75 talent, but lots of stuff to work on here. Haste is a little on the low side but that will come with more gear. Missing a JC gem. I recommend finding a similar length parse on WOL along with a group using a similarly geared ret who is doing more damage and using Comparebot(google it can't post links yet) to evaluate ability usage, cooldown uptime etc side by side.
