No great candidates want to be a teacher because they get paid shit. The market is NOT saturated in certain areas (unsurprisingly where the pay is terrible) and certain subjects. If you can't give 'em prestige, give them money. It is a specialised job after all, akin to a lawyer.

And you invest in education for a reason; it's why certain (blue) states keep getting more jobs and start ups and certain (red) states just keep limping along.
In fact as far as I'm aware the UK is the only european nation that outright bans guns for civilians.
Shotguns I'll give you (provided you're allowed 12 and larger gauges... because I mean... come on...) but not .22s.
This is why people ban guns. Gun supporters don't know what guns are.

Considering Congress's inability to actually get their shit together, aren't tax increases a near certainty for the coming year?

Apropos of nothing real specific, I'd just like to note that a strong salary structure and a priority based hiring system would attract me to teaching science at a high school level, and I have Ph.D. in Microbiology/Immunology. The present system actively turns me away from teaching - I think we're doing something wrong with someone with a high degree of expertise in biology is effectively discouraged from entering teaching.

I'd say those are far more important problems.
Excuse me, but you'll find no bigger proponent of education than myself. I actually take umbrage at the insinuation I'm anti-intellectual.

I also happen to live in NJ. One of the wealthiest states in the nation. Our teachers rank 10th in quality. You know who's first? Texas.

We also rank #39 in education efficiency. We're pretty good in Education Input/Output though.

Collectively, the public unions have bilked the NJ taxpayers for all their worth. There is literally no one to blame but the unions for our predicament. Our taxes are among the highest in the nation and we still have no money to pay the lavish benefits we've showered our public workers with. AND THEY'VE STILL DELIVERED BARELY MEDIOCRE RESULTS.

The one thing FDR was right about was that public workers' unions should not have the right to collective bargaining.

Ever entertained the idea of college biology?

The repeal of Glass-Steagel as it pertains to the ensuing crisis has nothing at all to do with this. In the future, try to not be spectacularly disingenuous when addressing me, I will call you out on your bullshit.

Actually Texas is the most rapidly growing economy in the United States and has been leaching jobs from California for some time now.

Are they blue? I haven't checked in a while...

    Ignoring the last part:

New Jersey is in the top 5 education systems:

    http://www.census.gov/compendia/stat...es/12s0269.pdf

You get what you pay for. Teacher "quality" (what measurement is this?) is nice but actual results? New Jersey is damned good them. Maybe those teacher unions know some shit, cos South Carolina's are crap and we're solid number 49.

Actually Texas is the most rapidly growing economy in the United States and has been leaching jobs from California for some time now.

Could be soon if the people saying that the rise of the Latino population will do it are to be believed.

A bit, but the barriers to entry are a bit sharp, and the salary structure is really poor in most environments. Without getting too deep in the weeds, I make a reasonable decent salary in my present postdoc position and my main goals are to get a position in the city that my girlfriend moved to and get out of the lab. There's very few college teaching options that would give me the sort of salary I'm looking for. Faculty positions at major research schools are great for some, but they're highly competitive and I'm not trying to do research for a living after this job runs its course.

    Liberals hate Texas.

They close their eyes, plug their ears and pretend that a conservative model for success doesn't exist.

    Secede? Hell yes secede!

I don't know what measure you're using. I find no evidence of the idea that Texas is the most rapidly growing economy though. Here's one source: http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/regi...ewsrelease.htm

I was under the impression that ND's energy industry led them to the strongest growth, and this is consistent with that.

I see mudslinging thrives well outside of the electoral process.

I agree that Texas is what a conservative model for success looks like. Here's what that result is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...y_poverty_rate

    #46 Texas 16.2%

Would you like to send them to New Hampshire?

    And then re-rank the states?

So, illegal immigrants make up 16% of the population of Texas?
