Man, if anything, I want to see more of this. I'd want WC4 to skip ahead 200-500 years and have way more industrialization going on. Iron Horde, ftw! But mix in more magic and fantastical elements, so we can have bitching coal-powered magi-tek engines and war golems running on enchanted steam.

    Wait, that's basically Iron Kingdoms...

I don't mind a bit of steampunk, but it's getting out of hand now.

I liked when it wasn't a big part of the game. You could see goblins and gnomes making some foolishly crazy inventions that usually exploded in their faces. Once in a while you saw a flying machine etc. But it was never a big part of the game and i liked it that way.

Now it's soon World of Industrialization. I liked the game when it was a medival-ish rpg with steampunk influences. Not the other way around.

You know what, you guys are right, real world logic doesn't work in this game, best to just accept for what it is. I guess it's always just been a pet peeve of mine that that all this technology could exist along side, the medieval setting in this game. You all made good points.

If Warcraft was just castles and dragons, I would have not been as interested in the lore as I do now.

That's the thing though, if the citizens of Azeroth have access to all this technology why even bother using swords, shields, bows and all that kind of primitive weaponry? Why not just pick up a gun since history has shown them to be a far superior weapon? Never bring a knife to gun fight anyone? You have rockets, bombs, guns all at your disposal yet you still decide to to use axes and swords? Why?

Anyone else feel the technology in the World...of Warcraft is out of control and breaks the immersion a little bit?
Oh OP, you're trying to make sense of a game that mails out dragons again

They have computers already. Gnomeregan for instance. There was that one annoying as hell dungeon with bronzebeard where we had to escort him as he "hacked" the computer.

However they were not smart enough to notice that gun wielders vs sword wielders would simply not be a fair fight.
How wouldn't it make sense???? If a humanoid bear could turn into a ferocious wild bear, I could see that making sense easily, a lot more than I can see a dogman turning into a bear, or cat.

I kind of agree with the OP. Don't get me wrong i like steampunk fantasy but for some reason it just seems a little off in WoW. It seems like every third quest i'm destroying helicopters or dodging mines. I get that Blizzard wants to make a unique world, but at some point you start seeing how far it has trailed off from high fantasy/steampunk worlds. With all the talking pandas, pets and mechanical atrocities it feels like i'm in an over the top steampunk version of Narnia. I hate Narnia.

I think Blizzard implements the kind of level of tech we see the Goblins and Gnomes pushing out because that's what they want. They want to be able to have things, technologically in-game, that wouldn't be in standard or traditional fantasy. They want to be able to deviate from that. Instead of just elves with bows and arrows, dwarves with hammers and wizards with magic they have goblins with bombs strapped to their backs and Gnomes in partially functional helicopters. Cannons and tanks.

I think it is there for sake of breaking away from tradition.

Seriously, its getting out of hand NOW? In Burning Crusade we had rockets, eco domes and dimensional spaceships

I agree fully! I personally don't use any of those mounts, haven't got any even.
I don't find it fitting in the wow universe.

you've never been killed by a bow, have ya?... Nasty little things. specially in the hands of someone that knows how to use it.

And you my friend has just pointed out the first instance of wow being all "tech silly".

The whole space tech angle that came with outland really didn't fit the game. It all started with Captain picard and the USS Draenei...

Warcraft 2 had flying machines, cannons, explosives, submarines, zeppelins, and oil platforms. The game even used oil as one of its three resources. Warcraft 3 had rifles, steam tanks, mortar squads and flamethrowers. The Warcraft universe has been distinctly steampunk since 1995. As I see it, there's not a whole lot to discuss.
Diplomacy is just war by other means.

So another reality-thread for a fantasy game. Thats all that has to be said...

But to give an analogy to the real world:

It nearly took 400 years development of guns, until they were used as the most common weapons. That was due to long reloading times etc. We don't have any reloading in WoW, because it would feel kind of creepy. Imagine it would take a hunter 2 minutes to prepare a shoot. i wouldn't want to play that... Besides: A blow from a sword can do as much damage as a gun, even more than "old" guns which weren't really accurate and not that fast travelling as bullets are today.

    A wizard did IT

no matter how many fancy explinations you can give

A wizard did it and wizard is continuing to do it and wont stop anytime soon.

that was the short answer the long answer is

magic serves the same function as alot of technology which has been shown to be unreliable at times and many high level mages/druids/shamans have spellpower and capabilities equal to wmds certain tech hasent advanced because its easier to perform with magic.

but again to answer every single possible question in this thread from a technical standpoint not a lore standpoint

    A Wizard did It. :3

A fantasy universe is a place where you can make technology work with magic, dodge bullets with mental training and use an axe to kill a giant robot, as long as you infuse your axe attack with some sort of magical/mental discipline only usable by those who master it with years of training. It does not make any sense, nor can it be explained by science. It's just imagination, imagining that our laws of physics, or even simple logic can be defied in a world which has " a reality beyond the comprehension of our ordinary and boring minds", kind of like religion but much less stupidity and much more brainstorm and fun.
