Upgrading stuttering computer.

Hello.

I'd like to upgrade my computer since i have problems running Battlefield 3 at highest details.. I have cash for a new cpu/motherboard or a new graphic card. What would benefit more?

I also feel like my computer is freezing, could that be a HDD issue or cpu?

Setup:
RES: 1680x1050
CPU: AMD 1055T X6
GPU: 6870 ATI
HDD 7200 rpm 500 gb
RAM: 2x2 gb

Both are about equally weak. Is the CPU overclocked?

Grab something that reads the drive's SMART status and see if there are any bad sectors.

Did you do a re-installation/repair of BF3 to check if that fixed anything?
Did you do a CLEAN re-installation of the latest Catalyst drivers? Use DriverSweeper.

Also your CPU is alright I guess (could do with overclocking), GPU could be upgraded to a HD7950/GTX670/7970...what make/model is your PSU and what's your total upgrading budget?

Really though, a 6870 should be enough for smooth gaming at 1680x1050 / medium settings. In multiplayer Medium barely looks different from Ultra, you should be busy either being blinded by the sun or blurred by suppression.

I have a corsair CX600. My budget is 600 $.

I tryed reinstalling the system and ran wow/bf3, i have bad issues trying to play them at high settings.

No sir, definitely not. i5 3570 = Ivy Bridge = the architecture is the latest shit available and far more powerful. But overclocking is still a method to extend the performance of what you already have

Forgot to ask you the most important thing, what's your motherboard make/model? No point even getting into OC'ing if the motherboard isn't up to scratch.

edit: wait wait wait, you have a CX600 and a $600 budget....that's more than enough for a whole new set of parts!

CPU: i5 3570K - $220
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Pro3 - $95
RAM: G.Skill 8GB 1600mhz - $25
Cooler: Xigmatek Gaia - $20 / CM Hyper212 - $25 ($15 after rebate!)
GPU: Gigabyte HD7870 - $240

Yeah, I know I'm pretty much abusing your budget since you'll be going slightly over with shipping.


So 3 options:
> Risk an overclock with that budget board
> Buy only the CPU/Mobo/RAM/Cooler (will cost $360-370) and stick with HD6870 for now, lower settings down to medium.
> Go all-out with a GPU upgrade to something like an HD7950/7970. It will ultimately benefit BF3 framerates more since it's a GPU bound game.

I am in a worse boat with the CPU, I am still on a phenom II 955. I can play BF3 on ultra settings at 1080p though, because I have two GTX 470s. It is old, but it is plenty. Try upgrading the video card and some ram and see if it gets you where you want to be.

I have kingston hyperx ddr3 1600 ram, I think I will keep on those for the moment.

Decided to change the cpu/motherboard and I'll probaly grab a new gfx card soon

HDD's and even SSD's are the biggest bottlenecks of any PC.
