    based on me, no.
ive spent my whole life playing violent video games, played all the GTA games as a kid, all the CoD games, doom, UT as a kid, im the most unviolent person ever. how ever it did mess up my social life. i always laugh when news tries to blame someones behavior on video games.

although i understand things affect people in different ways, some people might get really affected by it, but as a child its really up to the parent to monitor what games the child is playing, and if they are having any effect on them, to take action.

People were violent way before video games. When I'm angry/stressed I play video games to calm myself down, so I guess it's the exact opposite for me.
These aren't the spoilers you're looking for.

    Move along.

I'd say failing video games, especially in a competitive environment, can trigger violent temperaments. It doesn't matter if you pit them against each other in Bloody Gorefest III or Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

    No, but they could.

    Why?

I suppose someone who is easily manipulated may be able to be affected by video games.

No, lack of parenting triggers violent behavior. I wrote a couple papers in college about this topic, and yah, my findings all point to PARENTING being the issue, not media interaction.

I believe Penn and Teller did an episode on this and quoted statistics that violent crime has dropped almost 1/2 since the introduction of video games and also since pornography has become freely available.

    Correlation =/= Causation

I have played THOUSANDS of video games or more. I've spent countless, untold hours killing ghosts, goblins, dragons, drug runners, plumbers, barrel throwing monkies, aliens, blah blah blah. Yet I have NEVER committed an act of violence.

Why? Because I was raised to know the difference between fantasy and reality.

Kids killing kids because of video games has nothing to do with video games. It's kids not understanding what is real and not real, what is right and wrong. The only place that the blame lands for that is on their parents. Even if the kid turns out to have mental issues, the blame is STILL on the parents for not seeing it.

"Well honey, little Bobby is upstairs again with blaring music and smoke pouring out from under his door."
    "Has he killed anything?"
    "I don't know..."
"Then don't worry about it and go back to your newspaper and martini."

    They do not.

Violent people flock to violent video games. The games do not make them violent, they were already violent. Non violent people also play these violent games and aren't affected.

In SWTOR, I heartily enjoyed force choking Jaesa's parents, both at the same time . . . but knowing the difference between fiction and reality, I would never be that violent on reality.

The Virginia Tech shooter played video games to express his violent nature, he was already deranged and the game did not make him violent, nor did it worsen his condition.

If there was ANY truth behind this asinine idea that video games make people violent, then there would be a correlation between violent crime and the number of people playing games like Call of Duty. There is no correlation, no proven link.

Yup - they make kids dress up in blue overalls, eat 'shrooms, and jump on people and what not.

I'll read "they" as "a considerable share of prominent AAA titles featuring female characters", and reply that yes, they do. Not necessarily by conscious choice, but nevertheless archaic stereotypes.
This is a small part why, in RPGs and other games where you create the player character, I tend to make a female character. These games are inundated with male protagonists.

Of course that's not the whole reason, generally its also because the male models tend to be over done or fugly, but that's going off topic.

nope I'd say video games distract some crazies from doing crazy stuff until something happens that makes them act (bullying, harassing, being dumped, someone dying etc.)

Other than a woman's body image what are you refering to? In Saints Row and Chainsaw Lollipop women are kicking butt... granted they are very cheerleadery types but they are as hardcore as any other chracter in those games.

As far as I know, studies show that violent games make kids indifferent to violence, but they turn non-violent people in psychopaths.

By the logic that people should become blood-crazed killers just by playing violent video games, then a majority of middle aged women reading 50 shades of grey should be kinky and extreme sex-hooligans, right? Cause we're just a blank sheet of paper to be affected by media in different forms right? No free will or thought?

yeah this, I'm sure a lot of different things can trigger violance including video games when the person is unstable.
The nerve is called the "nerve of awareness". You cant dissect it. Its a current that runs up the center of your spine. I dont know if any of you have sat down, crossed your legs, smoked DMT, and watch what happens... but what happens to me is this big thing goes RRRRRRRRRAAAAAWWW! up my spine and flashes in my brain... well apparently thats whats going to happen if I do this stuff...

If video games affected our behavior we would all be walking around in dark rooms munching pills listening to repetitive music.

As a gamer this is a tired story I hear about. I was wondering why isn't there studies being done to show the beneficial effects of video games?

The therapeutic effects of releasing steaming through violent video games. People getting through bad patches in life by focusing on video gaming. The improvement of happiness for people overall.

Back OT - I personally don't believe violent media whether that be music, movies, tv, or games causes anyone to go insane or psychotic. If it does you are not normal or right in the head to begin with. The people who "copycat" violent scenes in books or movies IMO are already at the point of committing something heinous but lack the imagination themselves on how to carry it out.

Statistically speaking we have millions (read that: MILLIONS) of people playing CoD with maybe one incident a year. I'll admit the incident is horrible but we are talking about .0001% of occurrence. Now compare that to violent crime in general and we are looking at something insignificant.

Violent media has been around for many many years now and if there was any significant jump in violence we would have seen it by now. In fact I believe the tread is to the contrary.

Haven't they done countless studies and proven they have no effect? Not to mention if honestly say video games help let off steam... Call of duty man, the rage I let off in that game gets me through the day. Hahaha
