Customization orientated story driven RPG suggestions

Alright. my title might seem a bit...too demanding? shall we say.

Thing is, ive always loved playing RPGs, just about any kind, and honestly, what i usually end up liking most about games are customization. Talent systems, sphere grids, etc. This is one of the reasons i absolutely despised diablo 3, but thats just a personal opinion. What got me interested was Path of Exile. I read a bit about it, and i am very intrigued, as i love the sphere grid concept, being a HUGE FF10 fan. But i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions as to what other games could be similar, no matter wether its a pc game or console game. I was looking for a bit less of a hack n slash i suppose, and more along the lines of a story driven RPG.

P.S. it doesnt necessarily need to be an RPG in the typical sense. i love turn based tactics games as well, some of my favorites being fire emblem and tactics ogres. i just love the concept of playing a game MY way.

sorry for being so picky, and thank you

You might want to look into Disgaea series (turn-based SRPG, for PS2, PS3 and PSP). It has nice customization system of equipment (via specialists), you can make pupils to main fighting team so they could learn more spells/abilities from their pupils (sic), you can level each skill/ability individually, etc.

But other than that there are no really games with system like in FF X/Path of Exile.

You may like FFXIII and FFXIII-2? there pretty story driven the first game is pretty linear though the second game is alot better in my personal opinion

Any RPG based on D&D is pretty much story based.
Baldur's gate, icewind dale and such.

    How about two non-fantasy series?

Have you played the new Deus Ex game yet? :P Lots of story driven. There's fps shooting, but lots of stuff going around and searching, hacking computers, etc. And, you get to upgrade your character levels among different customization options too. Also, being by Eidos its got lots of S-E reference, like the bad guy with the gun hand being named Barrett, and one of the cities you visit, Hengsha is made in two levels, a bit like Midgar in FF7. You'll see posters for Final Fantasy 27 too. I'm sure there are plenty of other references to FF games and other S-E titles, but I haven't noticed them yet.

Of course there's the Mass Effect series which is awesome. If you're a fan of good RPG and don't get too hung up on fantasy only, they're pretty dang good.

i have played all the mass effects and enjoyed them quite well. i havent played deus ex, for some reason ive never given it a second look, but ill try and see if it would interest me

i looked into disgaea, and although i usually love games like that, as ive played almost all turn based strategy games you could think of on older platforms like ps1/game boy advance, i just seem to be turned off by playing a game with that type of graphics on a ps3 :/ dunno, maybe its just me
