Hypothesis: Gamers will run the national army's in within the next 15 years.

With the upcoming increase in technology of drones and other remote controlled weapons, my hypothesis is that gamers will be a huge part of future warfare. Think remote controlled tanks, fighter planes, drones, rockets.

ATM alot of tanks are controlled with an adjusted playstation controller because it feels more natural. Drones are allready remotely controlled.

    Agree / Disagree / Thoughts any1?

Edit: Just thought of Chinese gamers being the most skilled in the world.. oh sh...

They'll likely become a bigger part of the American army, though to say they'll "run" it is a stretch. Also, I don't think we're within 15 years of seeing remote controlled tanks and fighter planes.

AFAIK Western gamers dominate the FPS scene! And I guess it would be displayed as a FPS, so yay \o/

Nope. That idea is SO last decade. or wait, TWO decades.
Now it's programmers. B/c everything will be computer controlled, without you. Acting on their own or in packs, they don;t need you at the controls, like, at all. If you'e played wow, you know, players FAIL HARD sometimes, (why are you standing in the fire, move out of the fire, your dead, why did you stand in the fire), programs can bug/gimp/crash, but military grade is what it is, and that's a fuckton more reliable then civy stuff.
Actually, it won't even be programmers, they will just outsource the work like they do now for planes and such.
So I guess working in the military as a human might indeed turn into being a green maytag repairman.....

Proof that the mmochamp community can be a bitter and lonely place. What a shame.

Run it, maybe not. That would be more of a strategical type of person.

Don't underestimate the technological growth we've sustained for the last 15 years. We went from windows 95 to motion based navigation. From Nokia 3310 to the Iphone 5. And thats consumer market, not even talking about institutes like Defence or NASA.

They'll be a huge part of it, though I doubt they'll call them 'gamers'. They'll come up with a new word for it.

Human control is essential due to estimation. A computer can calculate risk but can't seperate a potential threat from a kid with a toygun.

Didn't the American army or CIA or something recently say they will never have computer AI decide if someone dies or not? I wonder how long that will stay true.

To be honest, I've been quite disappointed with NASA's progress over the past 50 years, but technology has certainly come a long way. It would be interesting to see how military tech plays out in the next 15 years. Fighter jets controlled by remote would be pretty damn impressive.

HA! I was just watching a show about that. Pretty cool stuff.

But yeah, with our increasing dependence on technology in the military with things like unmanned aerial vehicles, so will the demand for people who have experience with electronics, computers and controllers. AKA - us!

Nerds in the military; who would have thought?

The thing about AI vs Human is that when the AI say calculates what's the most possible outcome for situation, human error(Say it's a AI plane vs Human pilot) might actually end up winning him the fight since he does something that the AI's calculates as pretty damn dumb, and the AI then does a incorrect action for the situation.

Ofcourse there would be counter-measures for this I guess, but still just a thought I had. :P

There was also that scene in iRobot where Will Smith explains how he got his bionic arm, and how he felt the robot had made a mistake in saving him over a child, even though the chance of survival was higher for Smith.

They would make terrible soldiers, the age of the pro gamers were fps skill requirement was high i.e. quake2 has gone. This call of duty generation wouldnt stand a chance!

I'd actually say FPS gamers have gotten better if anything, heck, gamers in general have become better.

And let's be real, the pros don't play CoD. : P

Not within 15 years, all that shit would simply cost to much to roll out so fast.

So what happens when the remote controlled things malfunction and the enemy attacks the complex with all the "gamers" in it. We're screwed then right?

3+ more years for initial technology, +10 more to become Mil-spec. Yes, within 15 years is absolutely accurate.
It's coming. Israel will have the first robotic army, and they'll be semi-autonomous (semitonomous... yuk yuk yuk) human-controlled / piloted with autonomous ability / capability.
