When people can't care for household animals, they deliver them to PETA thinking that they'll rehouse them and such. Instead, PETA sticks them in badly conditioned shelters (see the images of the animals dying of disease or malnutrition, lying in their own urine), or just kills them (and throws them into bin bags and into the rubbish). It's ridiculous, because PETA are also strongly against lethal injection in most cases, and would rather the animal suffered till it died.
