[Other] Universal Studios sues porn company over Fifty Shades of Grey "Rip-Off"

Universal Studios has filed a copyright lawsuit against Los Angeles-based adult film production company Smash Pictures. It claims material from EL James' best-selling trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey, which has sold more than 60 million copies, was directly lifted.

It said Smash Pictures used dialogue, characters, events, story and style for Fifty Shades of Grey: A XXX Adaptation. Universal, which has bought the film rights of the trilogy, said it is "a rip-off plain and simple". "The first XXX adaptation is not a parody, and it does not comment on, criticise, or ridicule the originals," it said.

The lawsuit was filed by both Universal and James' British company, which owns the copyright to the novels first published in 2011. It seeks unspecified damages, an injunction and aims to recoup any profit from sales of their adaptation. Two subsequent movies by Smash Pictures were reportedly in production, claims Universal. Smash Pictures has yet to comment on the legal action.

Universal, which acquired the film rights for a reported $5m (£3.1m) in March, is currently developing the authorised film version of the trilogy with Focus Features. Kelly Marcel, who wrote science fiction TV series Terra Nova and a forthcoming film Saving Mr Banks - which stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell, has been enlisted to pen the script for the trio of films.

The casting of EL James' protagonists Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, is yet to be announced although Drive star Ryan Gosling has been rumoured in the lead role.

I have never actually watched any of them (honestly) but I see a ton of porno's that shamelessly rip off other movies, they've always been protected as parody in the past so not sure how this one is different.

I suppose it's because it's a badly acted porno, based on a book that is already a badly written porno. Based on another badly written series.

It's gone beyond parody, it just is Fifty Shades of Grey.

Well, I'm pretty sure this youtube comment sums it up,

what's the difference between the porn parody and the original?
But being serious, didn't they sue someone else for making their own version of it a few months back,

Here in wales, we got two that have cropped up,

    Fifty Shades of Pwlhelli

    Fifty Shades of Barmouth,

No idea whos writing it, seeing as I'm from the other end of the county, but I'm pretty sure their lining themselfs up to be shot by doing it

Also wheres the fucking originality, you want to write a soft core porno? go ahead, atleast come up with your own dammed title

They don't have any rights to Fifty Shades of Grey in the first place, don't they?

Does it even need to be a parody for them to be able to make it a porn?

Meh... If they own the rights then they own the rights. Silly to think that a porn flick would in any way hurt potential revenue from a more mainstream production but its hollywood. What else would you expect from them?

Seems a bit ironic considering what Fifty Shades of Grey is in the first place.

That's good publicity for Universal Studios.
I bet they are going to start regretting it real quick when they realize they aren't going to win.
These aren't the spoilers you're looking for.

    Move along.

They should've filmed Sasha Grey with 50 guys, then they'd be lawsuit-proof:P

Universal Studios would not in a million years publish the books in movie format, so they can fly a fucking kite.

I'm shocked they bought the rights to a fucking trilogy about a poorly-written book about BDSM and college angst. This world feels way too surreal sometimes.

So, all you need to do in order to get away with a complete ripoff is say it's a parody? I was in an adult store the other day (don't judge) and saw an entire shelf of "parody" porns. Friday the 13th, Men In Black, The Avengers, Star Wars, etc. Makes me long for the good 'ol days when they just parodied the title. Crouching Woman, Hidden Salami for example.
