These people seek either power, attention or control. Power seekers will kill adults, attention seekers children, control can go either way and is usually tied into either.
As you so aptly phrased it, there mentally unsound. So therefor we cant logically compare them to a rational thought process... but i'd wager there either attacking it for much more publicity or just generally dont care.
All we can do is give sympathy were its due, and lock the said perpetrator away and council/ treat them.

People who think that outlawing guns for the general public will fix killing and violence really need to have their brains examined. Criminals will still get the guns, illegally, and still kill people with them. Banning guns won't do a damn thing. I'd rather it stay legal to own a gun so that I can defend myself and my family from crazy whack jobs out there.
