    Ok, the moment is here.

    I ordered a second monitor!

I made space in my room, monday I will have a new desk.

    Currently I have a Dell Ultrasharp U2412M

    But NOW I ordered a: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm

Nearly the same size and ALSO IPS panel.

I did the right thing by buying IPS panel right?

Anyway, I have a HD7870 in my pc, it has left: A HDMI slot, a Displayport slot x2.

Should I use DP or should I use a DVI-HDMI converter?

Because you see, the new monitor doesn't have a HDMI slot.

while it's not exactly going to make a difference on 1920x1080, DP is cooler than HDMI

they are both digital connections that send data in packets, but thats about it, when you get into the details, DP is better than HDMI, which makes sense considering that HDMI is meant for AV equipment and TVs, DP is meant as the replacement for DVI on computers, however we aren't quite there yet, currently neither is better than the other, but that will change once we get 4k/8k monitors, as well as monitors that support DP daisychaining

4/8 K monitors? o.0 Ho, ho, the consumersmarket isn't there yet.

Anyway, I bought a LG IPS237L which has HDMI. I hope it is a good choice too!

I used an eyefinity 5970 with 3x DP monitors when they first came out. It sucked as the monitors would not turn on if the computer was on and the monitor was off. To get the monitors to work I would have to pull the DP port from the back of the video card and insert it again. Bought nVidia surround with exactly the same monitors using DVI, never had an issue. Won't be going DP until it's WELL matured.

I am a bit curious as to why you went and changed choise of monitor instead of just getting a DP cable? You can get mDP to DP cables for like 10€ or less.

Well, I have a HDMI cable lying around here unused.

    Better make use of it.

    Switched to a Samsung btw.

Me neither, seems a little whimsical... The U2312HM is one of the best price/performance screens at the moment.

You base your decision because of a cable you have lying arround? D: *mind=blown*

PS: Use a more meaningful title next time. Like: "Advice on purchase new screen". Yes i'm nitpicking again *shades fall onto face*

    Just because okay?

    I don't mind at all.

Anyways, I went for an LCD an honestly don't care.

Tomorrow it is coming in, and in about an hour get a new desk.

I'm going to be blunt here, and don't take this the wrong way.. But if you don't care about it, why should we?

You do know I meant: I don't care if it is not IPS. :P

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel

LCD does not imply it's not IPS. Did you perhaps meant you bought a TN, or a CCFL instead of LED?

more nitpickery: Technically the U2312HM is e-IPS.

DisplayPort is for cool kids. Grats on the new toy!!! Really hoping to read about lots of new toys from posters with the holidays here! And then in a few months (Mayan Calendar allowing) we'll have tax return goodies. :P
