Oak Ridge to launch Titan Supercomputer

So, I recently heard about the Titan Supercomputer, consisting of 18,688 computer nodes, which will be having 16-core Opteron CPUs paired with an NVIDIA Kepler K20X GPU per node. Yes, thats right. 18,688 CPUs and 18,688 GPUs, networked together. Now, the real question, is in what way can a monster like that be used?

Probably the same way every other supercomputer in the world is used.

    To do shitloads of math.

So this is what Project Titan has been all this time? A new supercomputer?

It is the system requirements of the new Crysis 4 game.

I intend to replace them as I find dumber quotes, but the second one will take some beating.

So could you just build a sweet comp with 1 of those cpu and gpu's? I dont understand why hardcore enthusiasts would opt for everyday home computer parts, even if they are high end like an i7 or gtx 690. Or are the high end performance home computer parts better, just not capable of being "supercomputer" components?

Was curious about that myself and the article I dug up stated that the graphics chip runs with 705mhz (which is less than cheap gaming cards) and doesn't come with a cooler or even an output you could connect a screen to. They seem to be used only for background calculations in supercomputers and probably in a bulk

They really should have called it Skynet, after the Terminator A.I.

Although technically the British military got there first, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_(satellite)

The British army officially denies any project codenamed "Skynet" and it's hypothesized use in taking back control of the North American continent.

Will it be able to run ARMA 3 in ultra settings?

One heck of a LAN gaming session.

It's for simulations. In the real world everything is connected. You could throw a ball out the window, that ball displaces the air which throws a seed off course slightly. That seed then lands in the river instead of the ground and never grows. If you never threw the ball the seed would have landed and grew. A simple action with a big consequence.

If you could simulate the world with that accuracy you could do all sorts of experimental things without any real life consequences and be confident that real life repetitions would yield the same result.

    Sounds rad...

    ...

So what does it all mean?

...Can it stand up to Crysis on ultra?

But the real question is: will it blend?

It's good that they've moved beyond CPU-only. Just wish CPU's would once again be bottlenecked by GPU's...

You'd think that, wouldn't you. Doubt it can pull more than 30 FPS in 25HC.

As long as you expand NHS to the USA, I have no issue with this.
