    My usb stick is overheating

Hi, so I bought one of those mobile internet thingies and the USB stick gets REALLY hot after awhile. It was pretty expensive, so I wonder if there's anything wrong with my computer, or a hardware problem in the stick itself?

    Help appreciated

I've only had it for a day though :O is it possible to have something really cold around it so it can last longer?

Edit: I just realised this whole thread is one big sexual innuendo

    http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-USB-Ext...extension+wire

If you can find one of these from a store around your area they work great .. Just hang it out your window and take the cover off of it ( take it apart so its open to the air).
    what

well if you own it after so long with a contract open it up add a heatsink with sticky thermal adhesive and close it up with a hole cut into the plastic body. or just drill holes into the plastic when u get it off for air venting.

I would confirm with the carrier if this is normal... otherwise request a replacement. Also find out what the warranty is in case you have issues down the line.

Modern flash drives and even some wireless adapters/modems can run a tad hot. You have to keep in mind though that even 50-60C and even upwards of 70-80C is fine for it run at but feels hot to the touch for most people. (Considering 60C is 140F)

This is a simple rule with computer hardware to see if it is too hot:

As long as you can touch it without burn, this is ok

    After this, you might worry

Well it is a radio transmitter so is expected to get a bit hot. it could also be getting extra heat from the usb port if its in a laptop that runs hot.

As long as its not melting the case off it will be fine.

I'd have enjoyed seeing you touch my GTX580's backplate while it was clocking ~87c in summer (max safe rated 105-110c)

Athlon 64 X2 Brisbane Core (the old K8), 165f ................ and it ran stable. When I pulled it apart after I did my new build, the T.I.M. had fused the CPU to the heatsink, had to soak it with rubbing alcohol to pry it apart.

On topic: I've got a few WiFi USB dongles laying around the house that run pretty hot, enough to where you can touch them but you dont wanna hold them for long.
