spatial curvature... and it is just portion of space we can observe

Dr Krauss,
A friend and I were having a discussion regarding cosmology. Specifically, it was related to the (flat) shape of the Universe (as told in your "A Universe From Nothing" lecture re: the possibility of a zero total energy universe.).
The question came up, "Well which part of the Universe is he talking about?". Is the entirety of spacetime flat? Or is it just space by itself? It has been my understanding to this point that, when discussing the universe in the cosmological sense, it complicated things to separate space from time while my friend believed (based on wording in papers) that it was merely the spatial portion of the continuum being referenced.
