I'm on my first build, I have a basic question. I have a seasonic x650, and the 24 pin cable that goes to the motherboard has the 24 pin on one end, and a 24 on the other end with an 8 pin forking out from it. Which end goes where?

I'm not sure what you mean by "8 pin forking out from it"
As far as I can tell, the x650 has a 24 pin cable, a 4pin ATX, and 8pin EPS. The 4pin 8pin (according to the specs) should be its own separate cable. You just plug whichever of those your motherboard needs (Usually at the top left)

Pretty sure those cables are keyed so they can only be inserted on direction, in other words only one end will work going into the PSU, and one will work going into the MB. I would check the manual for the PSU here and the manual for your MB to see if you need the extra connection.
It is a cable that has a 24 pin on both sides. And on the one side there is an 8 pin connector forking out from it.

If you go to 2:50 in this video, it will show the cable I'm talking about. Granted it's a different brand, but it looks exactly the same. http://youtu.be/PR4KeuMYm4U

Edit: My apologies. My PSU appears to be different. Sorry!

The side with a 16pin and 8pin goes in to the PSU.Sharp eyes will notice that the ATX cable actually gets two connectors, rather than one single 24 pin monster. I presume this was done so the two rows of connectors could remain the same width.

He explains it in the video. And if I'm not mistaken, it's an odd 18+10 setup, and 24pin on the other end. Either way... 18+10 goes into the 18+10 on the PS, 24 goes into the 24 on the mobo. It looks like it's pretty clearly labelled on the PSU as well. And you certainly cant fit 28 pins onto the 24 pin on the mobo.

Yeah. I had miscounted. The 18 pin and the 24 pin looked like the same size to me at first, and the 8 pin on the 19 pin end of the cable is kind of hard to plug into the 8 pin slot on the PSU M/B slot, so I was questioning it. I'm kind of overwhelmed a little with all of the cables and case fan wiring and such, and don't want to screw anything up.
